Radio programme explores the work of Theonila Roka Matbob advocating for communities affected by the Panguna copper mine in Bougainville, which was owned by Rio Tinto.

The mine generated enormous profits & caused severe environmental degradation, triggering civil war.

Rio Tinto is being taken to court by Malagasy communities affected by polluted water and health problems linked to the QMM ilmenite mine.

For years, Rio Tinto has been denying responsibility. This court case seeks to hold the company to account for a decade of damage.

Not only is the Grasberg mine dumping toxic tailings into West Papua's rivers, it is contributing to irreversible glacier melt and destroying a sacred landscape for Indigenous communities.

Funnelling minerals to the arms industry does not make us safer. Instead of fuelling a race for critical minerals – at home and abroad – the Government must ensure strict social and environmental safeguards and prioritise resources for decarbonisation.

As well as fuelling war, the mine will cause significant environmental harm, producing 600 tonnes of waste for every 1 ton of tungsten. This puts local communities at risk from pollution, and questions must be answered on where and how the waste will be stored.
