We'll share your feedback with our board of directors.

Every election, each proposition gets its own assessment based on the entirety of the proposition. Our board voted to be neutral on this election's Prop G, and strongly encourages San Franciscans to read our analysis and make their own decision.

Vote early + use a ballot drop box! Find the one nearest you at bit.ly/SFdropboxes

@lwvsf.bsky.socialOct 17, 2026, 7:15 PM

Ballot drop boxes are the best! They're secure, and ballots get collected from them on the regular. Using a drop box also avoids making your ballot travel through the US Mail, which is the slowest method and can cause problems if your ballot winds up postmarked after the Election Day deadline.

Being neutral on Prop G does not mean we support it. We opposed letting cars on the road in 2022 & were neutral on the 2024 prop that created the park because it lacked accessibility $. This time our board decided to be neutral, and we share our prop analysis to help people make their own decision.

Proposition G: Allowing Private Vehicles on the Great Highway in Sunset Dunes Park — NEUTRAL

Note: When we're neutral, we explain why, so people have information to make their own decision and vote.

Few local issues have been as heavily litigated and voted on recently as the Great Highway and Sunset Dunes Park. Since the government turned the road into a recreation space at the start of the pandemic, voters rejected allowing cars and other private vehicles on the Great Highway in 2022, and approved permanently closing the road to cars to create Sunset Dunes Park in 2024. The League of Women Voters opposed letting cars on the road in 2022 because of our climate change and transportation positions, and was neutral on the 2024 proposition because it lacked accessibility funding.

Proposition G would reverse those voter decisions and open the Great Highway to cars and other private vehicles Monday to Friday, closing Sunset Dunes Park to pedestrians and recreation during that time.

With 1.7 million visits in its first year, the park has become an important open space where the government continues to add traffic calming and recreational improvements. Preserving the park aligns directly with League positions on natural resources and the quality of urban life.

Opening the Great Highway to cars would be fiscally unsound, costing up to $20 million over the first five years. We’re concerned about the west side’s inadequate public transit, and the League supports expanding transit and reducing car travel. However, this proposition has no requirements to increase bus service, encourage driving less, address climate impacts, or pay for the cost of letting cars on the road.

After discussion, our board of directors decided to be neutral on Proposition G.

Finally digging into local SF and CA state ballot endorsements. There's some truly bad San Francisco local initiatives on the ballot in November. Always good analysis from @lwvsf.bsky.social , here's their recommendations:

tl;dr vote NO on A, D, E, and F (read more below)

If you’re voting by mail this year, don’t wait until Election Day to send your ballot. USPS has changed how mail is picked up and processed in parts of the country, which can mean your ballot takes longer to move through the system. Know your state’s deadline. Mail early. Protect your vote.
