In 1969, just before Apollo 11 was about to land on the moon, an emergency alarm rang.

“Our astronauts didn’t have much time, but thankfully they had Margaret Hamilton,” said Barack Obama as gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

In 1671, Friedrich Martens travelled to Svalbard and around Greenland as ship's surgeon on the 'Jonas im Walfisch' or 'Jonah in the Whale'. These engravings of a whale & fin whale are from the diary he kept, first published in 1675, where he recorded the area's flora, fauna & whaling industry.

Engraved plate from 'An Account of several late voyages & discoveries to the south and north ...' 1694, showing whale in profile, left and right, and also a fin whale in profile, with a harpoon on the extreme right

Cloddiau (sing. clawdd) are one of my favourite features of the countryside in Cymru. An earth bank, dressed with stone on each side - a field boundary in which plants can grow. We walked alongside this one, near Bontnewydd today, that has some impressive oaks growing from its core.

An Oak tree, probably coppiced at some stage, growing from a clawdd, the earth bank dressed with rectangular stones, below which plants grow from the roadside verge.

Every day, decisions are made that shape nature's future.

But those decisions need evidence.

Today we're launching our Science Impact Strategy 2026-2030, setting out how we'll maximise the impact of our science & turn evidence into action.
