When I was in graduate school 10^6 years ago, I know a grad student whose father was a leather worker in Wyoming. She had a belt and holsters for her P200 and P1000. And loops on the belt to hold yellow and blue tips. We were all so jealous.

The #AotearoaMicronauts in introductory microbiology here at the University of Canterbury in Ōtautahi Christchurch NZ are top notch. I have so enjoyed working with them, and remain grateful. Yes, I miss teaching!

I hope to find other ways to promote #MicrobialEnthusiasm and #MicrobialCentrism.

We are all being used, I think, and by very cynical people everywhere. I have no solution. I think all we can do is make our local environment kinder and more supportive of one another. That doesn’t bring clout or clicks. But it can make lives better directly.

While I have been gone in New Zealand for my fellowship, Jennifer Quinn has been looking after my #LabMascots: #BabyCarl the Kenyan Sand Boa, and #AzulaOfTheFireSkinkNation. I’m very grateful.

I left campus. Walked to Little High. Had a Bacon Bros burger. As I walked home past the stadium, a very nice woman I did not know asked if I was Mark. She said she recognized me from social media posts. This has been my experience in Christchurch: people are very kind. Thank you.

When I was chatting via Zoom with Jennifer Quinn yesterday, it was great to chat with our F1-A, Anson. He makes me proud. I hope to chat with our mathematically inclined F1-B Zach at some point soon. I love this family and miss them.

Today was my last day of lecturing for my #AotearoaMicronauts in introductory microbiology at the University of Canterbury in Ōtautahi Christchurch NZ. As lectures are recorded & attendance not required, I am happy to see 17 of the 79 students enrolled today. I have enjoyed teaching here very much.

My days in Ōtautahi Christchurch NZ are dwindling. It's a pretty walk to the bus station in the morning, and a beautiful wait for the bus going home in the early evening. It's a beautiful place with kind people. I'm glad I have visited these past few months.

This is so me. Eventually I will need the cataract surgery. But even so the "floaters" are no fun.

I know that I SHOULD be able to attach a camera to my Nikon with output to a screen, but that requires a level of knowledge and engineering I do not possess. I hope for some suggestions. Okay if everyone is too busy. 2/2

As I think about returning to Tacoma, I want to think about the the future for me. My eyes are HORRIBLE, so my Nikon Eclipse microscope is not useful to me via eyepieces. I am hoping to find an adaptor that lets me attach an iPhone or iPad to see the images I need to see. 1/2

I know that there is a CRISPR demonstration kit to inactivate lacZ. But why isn't there one to to change GFP to YFP or RFP? There doesn't seem to be one. Maybe I am missing something.

Two weeks from today, Jennifer Quinn arrives in Christchurch NZ. We will tour South Island and then fly home to Tacoma. We have been apart a long time now. It will be good to be with my truly better half.

#LuxArt FTW!

It's interesting: the individual microbes emitting the light are not "aware" of the gigantic art form of which they are part! It makes me think about what we do...

Anyway, many thanks to the students participating in #LuxArt here at the University of Canterbury.

Happy birthday to Guillermo del Toro. I think that he sees the world the way I always have. I mean, look at this quote! One of the people I wish I knew personally. I adore his work, and wish him well.

Morning thoughts here in Christchurch NZ.

Guacamole, chicken taco, and sangria in Christchurch NZ, Take 2.

As my Erskine Fellowship winds down, I was able to do a tiny #LuxArt session with a few of my #AotearoaMicronauts at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch NZ. We used a safe luminous bacterium I isolated from local seawater. I so adore the student creativity! #MicrobialPR

We all seem to think our imperfect knowledge allows us to judge others or say extreme things. We judge people we don't know, based on what other people we don't know write or say. I have done it too. I believe that we need to think before we judge. We seldom know the whole story.

I have always adored big dogs. But their time with us is short. Is mobile DNA involved?
