This day began as Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative inspired by residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, who, at 6 years old, wore an orange shirt for her first day at school. The school took her shirt away, replacing it with their institutional uniform.

Today, Sept 30, we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (#NDTR). Established as an official holiday in 2021 in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, NDTR honours the children who never made it home and the Survivors of residential schools.
