It certainly was. I'm always amazed how durign a cloud inversion how it can change so quickly so yo uhave to be quick o nthe draw with the camera and finding a composition.

Some more of this week’s mist and fog in Sussex. Monday: The Fulking Escarpment & Devil’s Dyke, with the Weald lost beneath a sea of cloud. Tuesday: Thicker fog this time. I had about 5 minutes looking out over the South Downs towards Brighton & the i360, before it rolled up & swallowed me whole.

Chasing the mist last weekend on the South Downs, the start of a nice run of misty mornings in Sussex. Friday: Ashcombe Mill at dawn, holding the middle ground between Mount Caburn and Firle Beacon. Saturday: The Cuckmere Valley area, as the sun broke through and mist lingered over the fields.

Starlings over the Helter Skelter, Brighton. 1000s arrive here every winter from as far as Scandinavia & somehow they move as one in a murmuration. Each bird is only reacting to its 7 closest neighbours, a phenomenon known as phase transition, yet the whole group ripples like a single living thing.

thank you Lola. Glad I convinced myself to get out of bed early on Wednesday to see such great conditons!

Chasing the mist again on the South Downs.

Up on the South Downs before sunrise a couple of days ago, looking over the Ouse Valley in Sussex. After a hard walk up a steep hill, it was nice to be rewarded with these conditions: mist lying across the fields below, the sky just starting to colour & that feeling of having the morning to myself.

Last November, the final light of the evening turned the grass beneath Stac Pollaidh a deep, glowing orange, under a sky of pink and violet cloud. It only lasted a little while, but it was one of those rare moments that stays with you.

This month’s page in the Brighton calendar is the West Pier captured with lightning, which felt like a good excuse to share some of the shots I’ve taken of this location.

Part two from the Yorkshire Dales trip back in Spring, wild garlic lining the riverbanks, limestone pavement underfoot and moody skies over Swaledale.

Mist over the Sussex Weald, as seen from the South Downs. This set was shot from some of my favourite viewpoints along the South Downs, on mornings when the weald below filled with mist. The last view just sold as an A2 print, so felt like a good time to share a few more on the same theme.

Bluebells, hawthorns, dry stone walls and waterfalls, a few days in the Yorkshire Dales this May.

The Curtain Call

Sunset over the Giant's Causeway. These basalt columns formed around 60 million years ago from cooling lava, and standing among them as the light faded was one of those moments that made the trip worth it.
