🧠 How did humans develop extraordinary cognitive and cultural abilities while sharing so much with other animals?

Inspired by Frans de Waal, @rensbod.bsky.social explores the “De Waal paradox” and how recursion – building on existing ideas, tools and discoveries – may help explain human uniqueness.

🎵 Have you ever noticed how sounds influence the way you eat and drink? From background music and restaurant noise to the crunch of food and sounds of cooking, auditory stimuli can shape what we choose, how much we consume and how quickly we eat or drink.

🌱 The findings suggest that red algae without a CCM could benefit from future #OceanAcidification, as higher dissolved CO₂ may make photosynthesis less limited by available inorganic #Carbon.

Read the full #OpenAccess article, published under #S2O: doi.org/10.1515/bot-...

@wendelvandersluis.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 11:00 AM

Researchers found that CO₂ affinity was similar in species with & without a CCM. However, maximum photosynthetic rates were higher in Plocamium cirrhosum & Delisea pulchra. Pollexfenia lobata showed a lower CO₂ affinity than values reported for isolated red algal Rubisco.

🌊 How might #OceanAcidification affect #Seaweeds? It may depend on whether they have a carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentrating mechanism (#CCM). A new #OA study in Botanica Marina compared four #RedAlgal anspecies & their photosynthetic responses to dissolved inorganic carbon.

🔬 Microscopy revealed Si in cell walls and marginal cells. Some seaweeds contained >0.6% Si by dry weight, highlighting the need to understand whether Si is essential for seaweed growth.

@wendelvandersluis.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 10:36 AM

🌱 Fine, filamentous #Seaweeds generally contained more Si than thicker forms, suggesting a possible structural role. Seaweeds also took up dissolved Si, with higher environmental Si increasing uptake and accumulation.

@wendelvandersluis.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 10:36 AM

🌊 How do seaweeds take up and store silicon? A new #OpenAccess study in Botanica Marina examined biogenic silicon across 57 #SeaweedTaxa from 17 taxonomic orders around #Tasmania, #Australia.
