Anfang 2026 ist uns an der UB Frankfurt aufgefallen, dass wir im Vorjahr in mehreren Fällen Open-Access-Zeitschriften mitfinanziert hatten, ohne es zu bemerken. Grund dafür ist die steigende Anzahl an Zeitschriften, die unter dem Geschäftsmodell Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) erfolgreich Open Access erscheinen. S2O hat dabei einen bedingten OA-Charakter: Bei Zeitschriften, die unter diesem Geschäftsmodell betrieben werden, erscheint ein Jahrgang nur dann OA, wenn ausreichend Kunden/Bibliotheken ihre Subskriptionen erneuern, so dass zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt (meist erst nach Beginn des jeweiligen Abo-Jahres) eine vom Verlag gesetzte Umsatzschwelle erreicht wird - andernfalls erscheint der Jahrgang im Closed Access. Rechnungen für Zeitschriften, die unter S2O erscheinen, enthalten oft keinen Hinweis auf S2O oder OA, so dass sie für Erwerbungsabteilungen wie ganz normale Subskriptionsrechnungen aussehen. Zudem gibt es Aggregatoren und Transformationsverträge, die einzelne S2O-Zeitschriften enthalten, ohne dass dies auf den Rechnungen ersichtlich wäre. Dieses Fehlen jeglicher Disruption für die Erwerbungsprozesse hat zum einen Vorteile, da sich S2O nahtlos in bestehende Routinen einpasst. Zum anderen führt diese Form einer kontingenten und "unsichtbaren" OA-Finanzierung aber auch zu Problemen. ...
