Recently received my copy of this by @paulbrand.bsky.social - looks great at putting the recent debate in England & Wales into context. Looking forward to reading properly.
Just done the latest Long Division piece for @mattchorley.bsky.social's programme - an amendment to the Iron and Steel bill in 1953, illustrated by a bit of Gilbert and Sullivan from 1882. As Matt said, "you don't get that anywhere else, probably for good reason".
Congrats!
➡️ 'Do MPs Venue Shop? Westminster Hall as a Strategic Policy Choice Venue', our article with Daniel Baldin Machado and @louisevthompson.bsky.social, is now out in Policy & Politics, free open access: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Latest piece for @thehousemag.bsky.social - on the Norway vote in 1940, drawing on a great piece just published in Parliamentary History.
There's many a slip twixt cup and lip. Me on how once we move from the normative abstract to the nitty-gritty particular on electoral reform, there's plenty of opportunities for self-interest to take over. Fortunately, to borrow another maxim, The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men Gang aft agley!
Sorry to be a (Conservative) party pooper, but
Thank you!
For devolution anoraks with a keen sense of nostalgia for the simpler, happier times of English votes for English laws, this is an interesting retrospective from Dr EVEL himself
@danielgover.bsky.social on how the system operated as system of legislative consent for English* MPs #devolution
A blast from the constitutional past, but a new piece from me reviewing the UK parliament's experiment with EVEL.
'The operation and abolition of ‘English Votes for English Laws’ in the UK parliament: differentiated voting rights and English ‘legislative consent’'
Answer in my latest piece for @thehousemag.bsky.social
As niche academic arguments go, this one is very niche (but it is at least very short). A response article by me and young @timbl.bsky.social to a piece in Party Politics...
This is pretty terrifying. An architect generated structural engineering calculations using AI. The calculations looked convincing to a non expert but were fundamentally wrong, and unsafe.
I had fun writing the Last Word in the latest (penultimate, I believe) issue of Political Insight.

tl;dr: Burnham must continue to take easy short-term wins and keep banging the drum about the long-term vision those short-term wins serve.
I have a short essay in this relaunched Progressive Review from @ippr.org, called ‘A Liberalism of Public Things’. Open access link below:

My thoughts on this come from observing the process closely over the last 2 years, engaging with people behind the scenes & thoughtful insights from our panelists at this excellent IfG event earlier in the summer with

Excellent summary of vote on assisted dying by excellent QMUL colleague @DanielGover
Why did MPs vote to reject the assisted dying bill – and what happens now?

It’s the end of the road for this particular bill.
