@europaeditions.bsky.social has been a solid source of Japanese literary fiction in translation, introducing authors like Mieko Kawakami to the English-speaking world.

I'm not the only one who will no longer review or promote their editions if they're being translated by AI.

This week for #Linktober I drew the Coral Earring from Twilight Princess and the Zonai Flame Emitter from Tears of the Kingdom. Given that these two items have specific magical applications, it's interesting to imagine how a future art historian might interpret them...

Linktober Week Two 🐉 #LegendofZelda

A line drawing of the Coral Earring from Twilight Princess.

Curator's notes:
A ceremonial earring once worn by members of the Zora royal family. The earring, which has been carved in the shape of a hook, uses materials derived from a species of coral found in the shallow reefs off the Faron coast. According to Zora folklore, the coral emits an odor that attracts a type of trout known as a Reekfish. The existence of this fish is unconfirmed, and ichthyologists believe it to be mythical.A line drawing of the Zonai Flame Emitter from Tears of the Kingdom.

Curator's notes:
A rectangular block of celadon stone carved in the shape of a dragon’s head. Bronze horns curl around the outer edges to form a partial base. A steel alloy barrel emerges from two sets of ceramic teeth lining the fissure in the stone. As the exterior of the object features no visible fuel value or trigger, it is unclear how this device would have emitted flame.

Drawing of a white skeleton resting against a wall of white lilies, brown leaves, and greenery on a paper textured black background. The expression of the skeleton is bit sad and worrisome

Above the skeleton you can see a simple framed dialogue box, with a few lilies and greenery attached to it.
In the middle of the dialogue box you can read the quote "Don't give up, Skeleton"

I'm sure every teenage girl wants to burn a city at some point, but I imagine that Celes was tortured by regret. Given how much damage she caused as an imperial general, it was incredibly brave of her to defect and join the resistance. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but it was the right thing to do.

#thelegendofzelda #ocarinaoftime #ganondorf

Artwork depicting the character "Ganondorf" from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), as he appears in the adult era of the game. The artwork is drawn in a manga-like style with rich red-tinted colours and black shadows. In the image, Ganondorf is seen from a slightly low angle as he walks toward the viewer. His head is turned in profile, wearing a somewhat sombre expression as he gazes upward to the light that shines upon him. His right hand is held out in front of his chest with fingers curling in a claw-like manner. On the back of his hand, the triforce of power glows visibly. His cape frames the lower half of his body, and from below, embers rise around him.

Thank you for creating such an elegant and atmospheric illustration of this character! I'm basking in the gorgeous gothic moonlight, and now more than ever I feel inspired to tell her story 💜

✨ A new comic from me and @ananthhirsh.bsky.social just launched on Kickstarter! ✨

🦄 🔪 Feast of the Unicorn is the tale of a Unicorn and her bodyguard, running from a world that would devour her.

You can back it here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/joh...

A horn to purify poison.
Pearlescent hair to weave into charms.
Soft marrow to return youth.
Sweet blood to mend any wound.
And flesh to revive the dead.

These are the miraculous properties
that make a Unicorn's body the most coveted thing in the world.

Panel 1:
A chef with a wooden spoon talks to a brown dog (bruno). He says “I have a new business!” Bruno answers “cool!”
Panel 2: he shows his menu. He says “this is my menu”. We can’t quite read what it says yet
Panel 3: a zoom in on the menu. It has just a few lines written on it. Soup: 1. Bread: 1. Soup + Bread: 2. He kept it very simple!
Panel 4: He shows Bruno a small pencil. He says “I designed it with this”. Bruno approves and goes “nice!”

AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP. Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down. "AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago. We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.

I also talk about the baseball minigame in A Link Between Worlds and the "demon" character Batreaux in Skyward Sword, both of which raise tons of questions that can't be answered. A cohesive system of lore is great, but I feel that silly jokes and allusions add color to a game's world.

I wrote a short essay about why I appreciate the goofiness of the #LegendofZelda series. It's called “In Defense of Dondons” after the group of strange creatures in Tears of the Kingdom that don't fit into the game's story... but that's part of their charm! 🐂 digitalfantasydiary.com/2026/10/03/i...

An edited screenshot of two Dondons from Tears of the Kingdom. The Dondons look like ox / rhino / armadillo hybrids, and they're happily chilling out in their enclosure in the rainforest next to Lakeside Stable.
