Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

Had the most wonderful 5 days on a writing retreat in Wales at #Emergence. Hosted by @philralph.bsky.social and #FernSmith. Stunning place. And my TV pilot is coming along nicely.

Obviously laughable. But a reminder of how these people would behave in power: Financially benefiting the journalists and pollsters who do their bidding, legally pursuing those who do not.

There are so many people, so many, that love film and want to dedicate their whole lives to making films, in front of the camera, behind it, in editing suites and casting rooms and makeup trailers. And that these locusts can come in and just devour the industry, take it from us all, is devastating.

But ultimately it's just a very, very sweet 80 mins where you fall in love with a plastic head on a massive cardboard box and a man who learns that being different doesn't mean you have to protect yourself in isolation. It's currently on Channel 4 www.channel4.com/programmes/b... so give it a go.

Mind-boggling, indeed.

Liar. Small boat crossings peaked under Johnson in 2022 reaching 46,000 in 2022. In current year they are 18,565 and falling. Also prior to Boris Johnson's Brexit there were none.

It's a disaster, and it can all be traced to
Labour ideology. Burnham has no mandate
from the people. He has no real ideas, and
no plan,

“The ability to relax and watch TV after a long day is in danger of becoming another budget-related stressor – an unholy combination of cable bloat and the endless doomscroll.”

Tell me again how the collapse of the BBC is a good thing… 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Anyone who sees this and cannot join the dots between the end of the BBC and the end of the UK’s world renowned TV industry… frankly, I despair… We need change, yes. We need to get good at making low budget risky TV again, absolutely. But axe it and say goodbye to anything but mid Atlantic dross.

The vast majority of creatives are struggling. Writers are leaving LA in droves. Directors are driving Uber when they aren't lucky enough to get gigs directing dubs or subs for foreign films. Recognizable actors are finding jobs they won't be recognized in. The whole industry is shitty right now.

👆What Phil said. At this point in time, if you cannot see the incredible benefit across thr entirety of British society derived from a universally paid for public service broadcaster then I really don’t know what to say to you.

I've said this a few times this week - the Beeb needs to adopt an Ally Pally mentality. Find studio space and give people permission to create in it. Low budget, rough around the edges, theatre, comedy, plays, drama, lectures, book at bedtime ... Just make stuff and see what sticks.

🥱

@philralph.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 6:46 PM

I hear you, Mark… but join the dots… all those actors, writers, crews, producers who make Ted Lasso, Slow Horses etc… where do you think they learnt the skills that taught them how to do their jobs so brilliantly? Working for BBC Drama. BBC News and its agenda has nothing to do with it.

@philralph.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 6:27 PM

I always know when times are really rough in film and TV as a screenwriter when my mind says - “Maybe you should go back to acting…” YES! THAT FAMOUSLY SECURE PROFESSION WHERE NO-ONE IS EVER OUT OF WORK AND THAT ISN’T IMPACTED BY ANY OF THE ISSUES DESTROYING SCREENWRITING!! GENIUS IDEA, MIND!!

The wrecking crew in action again: destroying any public good and breaking it up into bits that can be exploited by their pals, and bits that won’t make a profit and can simply be discarded. Decades of this now, and the reason why the country is (points at country). Don’t like it? Fuck you.
