Coode Street 732: Reading, genre and more

Does the SF ghetto still exist, do terms like space opera and epic fantasy have meaning beyond their utility in selling books, and just when it's OK to give up on reading a book.

I almost missed that this beautiful new volume of stories inspired by, and in honour of, Ursula K Le Guin is now out!

Edited by @jonathanstrahan.bsky.social and featuring tales from a host of excellent authors (see alt txt for the list), this really looks like a fantastic collection.

Combatting stereotypes, one asexual monster at a time... Dove Cooper explores aspec traces in John Wiswell's novels in this new subscriber essay.

Purple background, white text, which says Making Shesheshen a literal monster with no fixed humanoid shape, while making Homily thoroughly human and from a family of abusive people, also allows Wiswell to thoroughly critique the stereotype that casts aspec people as inhuman and incapable of love. Looking for some interesting reading? A couple weeks ago Charlie Stross posted about space opera. I won't attempt to synopsise. It's worth the read.

Just downloaded LibreOffice. Don't love Office, but not a patch on my dislike to copyedits etc in Adobe Acrobat.

Sympathies to Dockers fans. That was brutal.

I think I have to as well.

It's SO pretty. And your story is SO great!

@jonathanstrahan.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 7:53 AM

I cannot name favourites, but there are some really terrific stories in the book. And thank you!

Revolution in the Heart is one day old! The people at Titan did a fabulous job on this book. The authors knocked it out of the park. The Guardian called it 'probably the best original anthology of the year'. You gotta try it!
