Gathering beech mast is for my workshop at Allen valley folk festival this coming Sunday where we’ll be looking at tree lore and creating a giant beech mast poem in this beautiful clearing said to have inspired W.H.Auden and been used by John Wesley to share his beliefs💫🍂 #folklorethursday
Hello #Folklorethursday and thank you @botanicafabula.bsky.social for hosting the last session. This is @mythcrafts.bsky.social offering you a virtual cup of mulled wine as we toast to the stories of the harvest season.

Houseleeks on the roof to protect from lightning, horseshoe to protect and hold good luck, all the ancient tricks come to play as the grain arrived to be milled…has this all been lost in the last 60 years or are the fragments still there amongst modern farming monoculture? #folklorethursday
The Scottish heritage:bloody ploughman apples are ready to pluck at Culross palace garden~the story goes they first grew from seeds found in the pocket of a ploughman killed for scrumping at Megginch estate in Kinross~ I share the story in my latest book Collected Curiosities #folklorethursday
THE MOWING DEVIL or 'Strange News out of Hartford-shire'. An English woodcut pamphlet from 1678 that narrates a tale of Satan mowing a field in Hertfordshire. The images of reaping & gleaning are reminiscent of #harvest folklore; also cited as an early example of a crop circle #FolkloreThursday

An old Southern graveyard warning for autumn: never plant a red cedar in your yard. Folk belief warns that once its branches grow tall enough to shade your grave, your time is up. Cedar was planted only in cemeteries to keep restless spirits tethered to the soil. #FolkloreThursday
