Happy #WorldOctopusDay from a hungry mouth of a sea otter!
#Seaotters eat over 100 different invertebrates, sometimes they come with 8 arms that fight back 🐙

@elakhaalliance.bsky.socialRestoring sea otters to Oregon will require a carefully planned and scientifically informed translocation effort. It’s a big undertaking, but one that could help bring this keystone species, and the many benefits they provide to our coastal ecosystems, back home.
@elakhaalliance.bsky.socialThese adventurous males were thought to be searching for rafts of females. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t find any along the Oregon coast. Without a resident population, there are no female sea otters here for them to join.
@elakhaalliance.bsky.socialEvery so often, lone male sea otters believed to have traveled south from Washington’s population are spotted off the Oregon coast. That’s exactly what happened in 2024, when two male sea otters were photographed swimming just offshore of Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach 📸: @jenpsaki.bsky.social .
@elakhaalliance.bsky.socialSea otters once thrived along the Oregon coast, but today, there are zero sea otters living in the wild here 🦦💔. Oregon is the only U.S. state within the sea otter’s native range that no longer has a resident population of this important keystone species. (conti..) #seaotters #seaotter #oregon

@elakhaalliance.bsky.social👋 Happy to chat about sea otter restoration in Oregon!
@elakhaalliance.bsky.socialSea otters are members of the Mustelidae (mustelid) family, making them more closely related to animals like wolverines, badgers, and minks than to seals or sea lions.
