i don't know if it's the right move, but i'm just deleting & blocking any residential school denialists who show up on my facebook page today

I was putting my jeans back on after swimming yesterday and a rock fell out of the cuff, so I think it is time to wash them

When municipal council candidates promise to freeze or lower taxes, it that a reasonable promise?

Allison Habkirk, a registered planner and Capilano University instructor, laughs out loud at the question.

Wrote about taxes for @thetyee.ca today.

Two years ago, the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs called on five municipalities to address residential school denialism. @laurenwatsonjourno.bsky.social revisits those communities as candidates campaign for the 2026 civic elections.

Many municipal candidate platforms cite the need to freeze or reduce property taxes, find “efficiencies” and “live within our means.” Is that a reasonable promise? @akkabah.bsky.social reports from Powell River.

I have threatened to write a piece in defence of taxes for years now & it’s finally happening. Narrow focus on municipal tax promises, but still! Still

This isn't exactly a humblebrag because it just indicates that I'm heavy, but if I want to farmer's carry 75 - 100% of my bodyweight i will have to buy these, like, farmer's walk things you can stack plates onto because the gym does *not* have heavy enough kettlebells

This fall I am doing three new challenging things & I'm in the phase where I feel about as bright as a broken light bulb & about as strong as a wet paper towel.

I want to solve the problem, let me solve the problem, please, I need this win as I am up shelling scarlet runner beans on a Friday night

@akkabah.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 5:34 AM

Got a, like, “en guise de rappel” email saying school pic orders are due by Tuesday; child never brought her proofs home; no fear, there’s a code lookup online; ope! record not found; cannot solve the problem. It is driving me NUTS (short drive)

I’m from Hamilton, but now live out west :)

I'm tired and I hate it and I'm thinking of taking up boxing & putting my kid in jiu jitsu. I would rather be bobbing around like a cork in the ocean &, like, making batches of tomato sauce. We don't have to live like this. It sucks.

@akkabah.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 7:39 PM

I grew up so angry & on guard & ready to physically defend myself, so I know that I can. But I just don't really want to live like that again. The atmosphere we're living in right now sucks. People feel very, very comfortable being bigoted in online spaces. The "r" word has come back. I hate it.

@akkabah.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 7:36 PM

Walked by a new rainbow crosswalk today & honestly felt buoyed; checked in on FB and all the people who identify primarily as taxpayers are complaining loudly and angrily, sometimes with a soupçon of homophobia

@akkabah.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:49 AM

Cannot overemphasize how much I hate this reality

@akkabah.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:46 AM

“use the white and light green parts of the leek—” let me stop you right there, we are using the whole thing

I get why a soup recipe is asking me for two pounds of potatoes or whatever, but listen, that pot is just getting whatever I give it.

Today, the Vancouver Police Department issued a release saying "when it comes to the perception of public safety, the facts matter." In 2020, when the crime rate in the city was down, Vancouver Police Department Chief Adam Palmer argued that feelings mattered as much as facts.
