I will not only be relieved but truly *ecstatic* to be wrong, if more and better studies soon start showing that AI actually improves learning and cognitive motivation. But so far they all show the opposite, and that is consistent with the evidence that I and other educators are seeing on the ground
you donāt hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires

And here is the student resolution, replete with 21 pages of sponsors, detailed historical context, 16 whereas clauses, 8 sections (with subsections) of resolution, and 17 appendices. Students are very serious and it's time to listen. (Their parliamentary procedure also put us faculty to shame.)
Boulder Faculty Assembly passed a resolution calling for no extension of the OpenAI contract. Vote was 39-8-1 after suspending the bylaws. Everyone at CU Student Government public comment has been fired up about their corresponding resolution, talking about trust and societal impact. So energizing.
This morning we handed our open letter on food resilience in at 10 Downing Street, signed by more than 150 experts, food organisations, and community groups. š§µ

He thinks it represents thoughts of people (as of a real focus group) extended to current topics, not merely linguistically plausible text. And he's making national policy decisions without awareness of his delusions. Media should report it as bureaucratic misconduct and question fitness to serve.
Sick to the back teeth of people in academia passing papers, reports, emails etc. through an LLM, ostensibly to improve readability or whatever but actually just transforming human writing into repulsive, staccato, marketing-speak that has a veneer of validty but little-to-no actual fucking meaning
Feeling particularly bleak today.. like this is the final metastasis that takes out an already ailing institution. But fuck that. There are so many of us resisting. There are so many who actually care & are working to reclaim universities for the good. Join us! climatejusticeuniversitiesunion.org

I've been trying to word my feelings between fascism and AI and this just sums it up beautifully, better than I could ever word it.
The gaping hole in Colm McCarthys article in the Business Post today is this "The only available evaluation of MetroLinkās costs and benefits was released as part of the TIIās preliminary assessment in 2022."..... A business case was published last week.....
On World Rivers Day let's remember the importance of rivers for our own wellbeing.
I measure out the seasons in river swims. It gifts me resilience for my autumn, resolve for my winter, hope for my spring and pure joy for my summer.
Our waters are life, let's protect them.
The Department for Education's AI tutoring initiative is getting pounded with criticism from both sides.
Some critics have launched a call to pause this initiative docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
Irelandās shame: The game that should have beenĀ stopped Israel have just equalised against Austria. The scorer, Sayed Abu Farchi, runs to the corner to celebrate. With a gleeful smile on his face, he picks up the corner flag, takes aim and fires, before simulating the recoil of a gun.Ā Just twoā¦
This event last night was unbelievable. Truly canāt believe how many people came out and just how passionate and energized people are here. Dublin and the people here are officially the greatest.
Money from foreign students (who pay multiples of the domestic and EU fees) is a critical source keeping Irish colleges afloat. The Minister for Higher Educationās complaint is another thinly veiled effort to address the synthetic bot army of X, and their demands to see fewer brown or black people
