The Glass Cage by John Healy: Stunning record of a life

irishtimes.comThe Glass Cage by John Healy: Stunning record of a lifeA blistering honesty defines the prose, a willingness to present the author in an unflattering light

John Healy's The Grass Arena is a classic. This is my take on the sequel. www.thetimes.com/culture/book...

Hey, if you’re not already generally furious about everything, this little bit of historic sexism will top off your irritation nicely.

JM was instrumental in getting this book published at last.

Excited to get this - hadn't realised it was out yet. Also, amused by DDL serving up a @backlisted.bsky.social trope

Utterly delightful back-catalogue episode of @backlisted.bsky.social, for the (witchy) season that’s in it, about ‘Lolly Willowes’ by Sylvia Townsend Warner, who herself was quite a fascinating character. 📚💚 www.backlisted.fm/episodes/8-s...

Another wonderful piece. After a listen to the song lauded in this week's instalment I've decided that I prefer Andy's writing about the song much more than the song itself.

This is great as usual, on the pleasure of not one-hit wonders, but the artists who release one thing we love in a career to which we are otherwise indifferent. As an aside I have always said that if their first single had been on Postcard things might have been very different

It's a fascinating thing, those bands you only like one record by There are plenty of bands who were great early on and then became shite, fewer who have got the other way. But the one song bands are a question about choice. Great from Andy as ever.

Lovely afternoon at #cheltlitfest: Andy Miller interviewing Hermione Lee on Anita Brookner and a chat with John Mitchinson in the book signing queue. It doesn’t get much more @backlisted.bsky.social than that.

An excellent evening listening to
@imcmillan.bsky.social talking about his new collection of poems “Red River Valley”.

Talked Barnsley v Grimsby and then he also very kindly signed my copy of “Under The Volcano” from the brilliant @backlisted.bsky.social episode. The best type of evening 😊

Ian McMillan reading from and about his new collection of poems “Red River Valley” at the Central Library in Manchester. Part of the Manchester Literature Festival 2026.Ian kindly signed my book, I then asked him to sign my recently purchased copy of “Under The Volcano”by Malcolm Lowry, subject of an episode of the consistently excellent Backlisted podcast series. Thanks IanAnd still time for a pint.

This week's reading. Lots of time on trains at the weekend. I hadn't read the whole of Autumn Journal before but the weather got colder and the @backlisted.bsky.social episode with Samuel West is inspiring. More in alt text

Halfway through Moby-Dick, still taking our time.
It definitely turned Autumn this week so I read Autumn Journal by Louis MacNeice
One day, everyone will have always been against this by Omar El Akkad. An absolutely remarkable book. Angry and optimistic and moving and I hope he's right. Made me question myself more than I was comfortable with in a good way. Id love to think it won't only be preaching to the converted.
Nearly finished my second Willy Vlautin, Lean on Pete. No spoilers but also very moving. A great American writer I think.
