John Prine would have turned 80 this week. He survived cancer, twice, only to be taken from us too soon anyway, due to complications from all things…COVID-19. Remember COVID? Fuck this shitty timeline, and fuck the people who made it worse. Prine was born in Maywood, Illinois, not too...

The Social Reckoning is smarmy and obnoxious, as is Sorkin's wont, but its depiction of J6 is offensive to boot. I kind of hated it.

The Social Reckoning frames all this with Mark watching the insurrection on multiple monitors as he struggles to decide whether to deactivate Trump’s Facebook account. The suggestion here is that Facebook had a causal relationship to January 6th, not a correlative one, an offensive idea because it diminishes the agency of the domestic terrorists who stormed the Capitol grounds that day. The film cheapens what happened by suggesting Mark helped stop it, and no amount of footage of first responders in triage erases that.

All the hallmarks of a Sorkin screenplay are in The Social Reckoning. He cannot help but indulge his favorite trope – condescension toward women – in a scene where Jeff mansplains Broadway musicals, and later when Jeff declares that any accusation of mansplaining just means the man is winning the argument. Rather than develop subtext through visual storytelling, he has his characters explain the subtext it in excruciating detail. The strangest instance is in a scene where Frances, in a thankless monologue, looks at a basketball player on TV and cannot fathom the happiness he must feel. This utter lack of empathy is bizarre – anyone, even a data scientist at Facebook, can understand the thrill of athletic victory – so it is mostly an awkward setup for the final scene, where Frances raises her fist in triumph like Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club. The more traditional score by Alexandre Desplat, a stark contrast to Reznor/Ross, cloyingly embellishes this tone-deaf moment along with several others.
