Next week is #OpenAccessWeek! We encourage you to celebrate it by joining the movement that aims to revolutionize the publishing system by moving away from gatekeeping practices to an open, transparent system where dialogue between researchers, reviewers, editors, and readers is encouraged!

The United States’ Low Birth Rate is Not a Crisis, Experts Say

UMD Researcher’s Survey of Demographers Reveals Shared Lack of Concern

Of all the things you may feel you need to worry about right now, the United States’ low birth rate isn’t one of them, finds a new survey of experts on human population.

The 190 experts who answered University of Maryland Department of Sociology Professor Philip Cohen’s survey, which was fielded August 24-September 4, 2026, hailed from a variety of academic disciplines; economics, sociology, political science, geography and more.

The integration with OSF Projects was a very strong advantage for us, but there are good alternatives now both for the papers and for research materials, and it is not as important for them to be on the same platform anymore. So, yes, considering alternatives.

@socarxiv.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 4:42 PM

Not many people submit that many papers. The main issue is AI-assisted scholars who post many papers at a time (we have seen 50 at once). This policy lets us just reject them based on volume instead of reading them and justifying each rejection.

@socarxiv.bsky.socialOct 1, 2026, 10:00 PM

SocArXiv now has a limit of two papers per week. If authors submit more than that we assume they are LLM-generated and reject them all. Normal humans who need to upload a batch of papers, which sometimes happens, must make arrangements. Also today, ArXiv set a two papers per month limit.

Come join our gang! Especially if you're polisci or law: disciplines that submit a lot but are not represented on the active moderation team

@socarxiv.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 12:47 PM

At SocArXiv, our intrepid volunteers screen a few dozen papers per day, using this moderation policy: socopen.org/moderation-p..., supplemented by this AI policy: socopen.org/ai-policy/. If that sounds fun or interesting or important to you, join us! Contact: socarxiv at gmail.

John Levi Martin's detailed methodological critique of the "Rubin report" about sociology probably should be required reading for all sociologists. Well worth your time. One take-away is maybe our internal disciplinary fractiousness has some good sides. 1/

Unfortunately (?) it's not our platform and we can't modify it. We have requested a list of high-priority modifications that will probably never happen (eg, automatic ORCID requirement, ability to give R&Rs instead of just rejections, new subject classification, etc) due to resource constraints

@socarxiv.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 12:55 PM

We didn't use to have proper versioning, with a DOI suffix (v1 v2) and new notification for each version. Now that we do, which is good, we have to moderate every version, which is a hassle. The work of comparing versions would be untenable (we have no capacity to automate, no staff, no budget) 😃

@socarxiv.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 12:55 PM

Minor corrections are fine, but we sometimes caution people who submit many versions, which can be deliberate to generate attention (and we may behave erratically - Sorry about that!) Please feel free to resubmit - if you send an email to socarxiv at gmail we'll make sure it goes through.

@socarxiv.bsky.socialSep 11, 2026, 3:46 AM

We do let you fix minor bugs. But the new version has to go through moderation. If you have a trustworthy, reliable way to classify things as "minor" without requiring review, we're all ears. Absent some advanced system, seems to me the service is either moderated or it's not. Sorry to disappoint.

$3.7 billion spent on APCs in 2025. That's ~1000X more than it costs to run bioRxiv/medRxiv.

Worth thinking about as we consider how to fund infrastructure...

Important news from our host, COS. Starting in November SocArXiv users will no longer be able to create new OSF Projects. You will need to host research materials in another repository, such as Zenodo, and link out to them. Existing public projects will be preserved. Preprints service will continue.

CCenter for Open Science@cos.ioAug 11, 2026, 12:15 PM

COS is announcing important changes to the Open Science Framework (OSF). OSF Projects—used for project collaboration, file mgmt, & storage—is being phased out as an active workspace over the next 6 months. This change does not affect persistence & accessibility of existing public projects. (🧵1/2)
