11. I will not be taking questions. The story of a woman whose data was stolen by two ambitious men who then did not credit her seems to be too powerful to be overcome by mere facts. This is, of course, all Watson's fault because of how he presented events. We are all hoist by his petard.

A lot of excitement on here about the article in Science summarising the discoveries of @alistairsponsel.bsky.social and Brian Sutton, just published in the Journal of the History of Biology. Some people have asked, so here is what I think they show, and what are the implications:

Today marks 100 years since Paul Kammerer took his own life on a mountainside near Vienna.

Only a few months earlier he was being fêted across the world as Darwin’s heir

Then he was accused of faking his most (in)famous experiment…

I made a radio programme about him

🏺 🦣 Nice paper on later E. European Upper Palaeolithic mammoth ivory figurine production & aesthetics.
The Mezin-type geometric designs are so beautiful, and their placement on the (apparently) female figurines might indicate tattooing or scarification traditions.

Yes! And i always think of Dorothy Hodgkin (née Crowfoot) who’s earliest chemistry work was on mosaics from her parent’s dig. From archaeology to a Nobel prize… see this fab post by Georgine Ferry, & the parallel story of how networks key in x-ray crystallography trowelblazers.com/2014/09/11/d...

So many great quotes from @flygirlnhm.bsky.social (of course!) in this piece on “plagues of flies” —i can’t pick one to snippet, so just go and read them all!

theguardian.com‘It makes you feel you’ve got a really dirty house’: what’s behind the UK’s plagues of flies? From Leicestershire to Carmarthenshire, neighbourhoods are struggling with wave after wave of houseflies. Why are they suffering while others are spared? And is there no alternative to nets and zapper...

These days talking about de-extinction comes with the feeling that I will be punished for it by whoever 👀 it is who is tragic enough to smear me and my work (academic and engagement). But talk about it we must, as these things should be public discussions -- not the preserve of private enterprise

Happy centenary Sir David!

Are there one hundred things named after David Attenborough?

Surely we should be able to compile a list…

I will start:

1. Attenborosaurus a plesiosaur from the Jurassic Coast

Let’s see if we can get to 100!

Once upon a time, in the late 1800s, people in Japan got really into breeding mice. Coloured mice. Patterned mice. Even mice that danced. They became known as Japanese Fancy Mice, and that caught the attention of researchers in Europe and America, who imported them for study. 2/n
