Please enjoy this new offering from the lab: we discover that #excavates - ancient flagellate lineages with a voracious appetite for bacteria - change their behaviour depending on the availability of said prey!

Hmm. Good points, @simoncleary.bsky.social and @noelledwyerphd.bsky.social.

Could cold storage (magnetic tapes?) of raw data be a service that journals could provide?

It would lighten the burden on PIs and give journals an important role in safeguarding the integrity of the papers they publish.

The deadline is approaching! NIH is proposing changes to how peer review is used in funding decisions and how outcomes are reported and they want to hear from you. Comments are due by October 13! Comment here: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

And scientists provide preprocessed data as a supplement?

The window where generative AI in science can be distinguished from real data is closing. What is the future? Perhaps Nikon and others need to have their microscopes cryptographically sign their output with the image specs (like C2PA does for news photos?)

@reitergroup.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:02 PM

Re the Small World in Motion: "Nikon has determined that the winning video did not comply with the competition rules regarding generative AI." And, importantly, "It should not be interpreted as a judgment of the entrant's professional reputation, scientific contributions, or intent."

Microscopy images are scientific evidence, and that image processing must be transparent and faithful to the underlying biology. Reinforce those standards, especially now-insist Nikon uphold them. #NikonSWiM2026

Basic Research published in #ASNJASN identified a protein called ARL13B that helps drive cyst growth in PKD. In mice, blocking this protein reduced cyst growth and improved kidney health, suggesting it could be a possible target for future treatments. kidney.pub/JASN1238 @vansciver.bsky.social

Still celebrating today's Nobel-winning role for Chlamydomonas research, I highlight new, exciting Chlamy discovery from the Lechtreck Lab @universityofga.bsky.social. There are different (maybe 9?) Polycystin complexes in flagellar subdomains involved in fast swimming!

Thank you for the additional information, @ningxuoptics.bsky.social. DOE with DMD seems like it could be a powerful combination. Could you please share the pre-AI imaging to illustrate what is DOE+DMD and what is AI-assisted post-processing?

ʙɪɴᴅᴄʀᴀꜰᴛ2 is out, and we're not waiting for the paper. The full code drops today, free for academic and industry use.

We're releasing it early so you can start designing right now, and bring its full power to the current Adaptyv competition.

Millions of beating cilia keep airways clean. At the base of each is the transition zone (TZ), a gate that controls which proteins enter and leave. In our paper out today in Science, we used cryo-FIB-ET to image the TZ inside human airway cells www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
