Responders should be able to swarm a place when its first few infections appear, tracing contacts, engaging communities before transmission takes off… “Putting out small fires isn’t possible, you end up with massive fires everywhere” @jasongale.bsky.social

Congo recorded 6,942 cases and 3,349 deaths through Wednesday. The epidemic had reached 61 health zones across 6 provinces before the Sud-Ubangi case.

Transmission has been easing in several hotspots in Ituri, while accelerating in North Kivu, Africa CDC said.

1/2 Ebola has reached a 7th province in Congo. A 23-year-old man traveled more than 2,000 km over about 3 weeks, passing through Rwanda and Uganda and then across Congo before dying in Sud-Ubangi. His journey shows the challenge of containing the virus as it moves along busy transport corridors.

As the Ebola outbreak unfolds in the DRC, we explored different control scenarios: Improved case detection has the largest impact, but even a moderately effective vaccine could markedly reduce mortality, either through ring or community vaccination. 👉https://tinyurl.com/37ssjdvm

2/2 It’s a problem that long predates this outbreak: real health workers can go unpaid while “ghosts” make it onto payment lists.

Now that dysfunction is complicating the response to the world’s fastest-growing Ebola epidemic. 🎁🔗👇

Six Ebola checkpoints in DR Congo stopped reporting because the people staffing them hadn’t been paid.

Elsewhere, officials checking a list of 240 people supposedly working at an Ebola center could find only 40.

What has Covid left behind for the scientists who study dangerous viruses?

@chafkin.bsky.social and I spent time with Bob Garry, whose shrinking Tulane lab offers a glimpse of what’s happening to virology just as the forces that drive outbreaks grow.
