According to the latest Politbarometer survey, 68% of Germans believe the #farright #AfD is a threat to democracy (somewhat down from 72% in September 2024), but only 43% support banning it.

Bar chart from ZDF Polit Barometer showing public opinion on AfD: 68% believe it endangers democracy (yes), 29% disagree; 43% think it should be banned (yes), 51% disagree.

❗ There are two ridiculously good 2.5 year postdocs on 'Trust, Participation, and Democratic Resilience' - one focusing on experiments, one on quants (general), over at @politicsoxford.bsky.social :

This new electoral law has now passed. Meloni's govt is now likely to last a bit longer. My hunch is that we will still have early elections, but in the spring

This is not good

Supporters of a conference should not determine the contents of the panels and program. And pulling out in response to US pressures is highly problematic

And so it begins: the very first proposal of the new regional parliament in which the AfD is the strongest faction is about an immediate end to sanctions against Russia and the normalisation of relations. (Which, of course, they cannot decide at the regional level.)

Ook deze maand schreef ik een column voor @sampolmaandblad.bsky.social

Ik maak het argument dat goede vertegenwoordiging meer is dan de kiezer napraten. Goede politici volgen de meerderheid niet, ze creëren die!

It was always clear that David Goodhart's fairy tale of a struggle between rootless cosmopolitans and down-to-earth conservatives ("Anywheres vs Somewheres") was not influential because it was accurate, but because it confirmed the prejudices of right-leaning commentators. Now we have the evidence:

How do voters deal with the uncertainty which coalition government the party they vote for might ultimately join?

Excited to see our paper on this question typeset in @thejop.bsky.social

We show that voters are risk-averse and value less uncertain government prospects.
