Today, the MPSC authorized Consumers Energy to raise its natural gas rates yet again, by 4.3% for a typical residential customer, allowing the monopoly utility to raise an additional $139.2M per year from its bill-paying customers. More at go.mi.gov/hoj663629

“Utility customers across the State, whether they pay their bill to Consumers Energy or DTE, ask all the time when their energy bills will stop climbing. And it’s clear that the answer is never. For nearly eight years my office has worked doggedly to curb these utility rate hikes, and in turn the cases have only grown. Change must come, to our current system of annual on-demand rate hikes and our regulatory structure, but the only changes we’ve seen are fatter rates and heavier bills,” said Attorney General Nessel.

@miattygen today announced a lawsuit against HailgateA2 LLC & owner over violations of common law & the MI Consumer Protection Act, alleging unlawful assertions of association with UofM fraudulent ticket sales to football games and concerts. More at go.mi.gov/rnpdk3627

“Purchasing tickets to The Big House, for a big show or a big game, shouldn’t be a big ripoff. Our Consumer Protection Team received reports alleging thousands of dollars in tickets and memorabilia were never delivered, and the purchasers never refunded. The Michigan Consumer Protection Act provides robust protections against bad actors and predators in the marketplace, and we will fully enforce the law to protect Michigan consumers and visitors to our state,” said Attorney General Nessel.

@miattygen.bsky.social Dana Nessel has joined 45 states and territories seeking court approval of settlements with three drug manufacturers over allegations they conspired to inflate generic prescription drug prices, reduce competition, and unlawfully restrain trade. More at go.mi.gov/y5twt3610

“Prescription drugs are not optional expenses for people who need them, and no one should have to wonder whether the price they pay has been driven up by illegal deals between drug companies. When companies put profits ahead of fair competition, patients and families are left paying the price. We are committed to holding accountable those responsible and fighting for a marketplace that gives consumers access to medications they can afford,” said Attorney General Nessel.

“The number of threats of violence made against elected officials are rising across the country and, sadly, local leaders, even prosecutors, are not immune to this disturbing trend. These actions cause public servants to live in fear in their own communities for simply doing their job. These threats carry significant legal consequences and my department will continue to prosecute these offenses to the fullest extent of the law,” said Attorney General Nessel.

This week, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan dismissed the Trump administration challenge to Michigan’s Hen Enclosure Law, announced Attorney General Dana Nessel. Read more at https://go.mi.gov/dg0pv3573

Quote from AG Nessel:
“I am pleased the District Court dismissed the Trump administration’s flawed assault on Michigan’s authority to protect the health and welfare of Michigan residents, as well as the animals we rely on to feed our families. This lawsuit was a thinly veiled attempt by the federal government to shift blame for higher costs at the grocery store from the President’s own failed policies to state laws that protect animal welfare.”

Scales of Justice

Quote from AG Nessel:
“Public servants, from judges to clerks to local officials and lawmakers, shouldn’t have to fear for their personal safety, or their very lives, for fulfilling their duties. Threats of this nature are unacceptable against anyone, though when they are made against an officer of the court for their service to public safety, it’s a crime not only against the victim but also the institutions that keep all our communities safe. In 2019, I established the Hate Crimes and Terrorism Unit in our office to handle threats made such as these, which are becoming more common in the years since, and I trust the Unit will effectively pursue justice in this case.”
