Thanks to everyone who contributed to this project: @clabreu.bsky.social, @oliviamghosh.bsky.social, @jonascremer.bsky.social and @petrovadmitri.bsky.social !!
I’m excited to share our new preprint, where we ask: to what extent can evolution in fluctuating environments be predicted? Spoiler: far more than the strong history-dependence of fitness would suggest!

Out today in @nature.com: our review on how single cells evolve into multicellular organisms. With Ozan Bozdag, @kaitong25.bsky.social, Peter Yunker, and @matthewherron.bsky.social.

Johns Hopkins Biology is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in computational genetics and genomics. Applications due Nov. 8th: apply.interfolio.com/194924
In my experience, this has been an incredibly supportive environment to build a lab. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
It was a good paper too! Eventually pnas accepted it. static1.squarespace.com/static/64dd8...
My record when I was in grad school, was getting a postcard rejecting the paper before I got the postcard saying they received the paper and that they will be giving it due consideration:)
Please share! My lab is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar in evolutionary development. For more details feel free to email me.
How do Burkholderia multivorans bacteria adaptively evolve during infections of the cystic fibrosis airway?
A longtime collab and intensive study of 8 patients links bacterial adaptations to disease progression. Our findings also unite prior studies.
the Perspective is a super interesting read. I haven't waded into the arcana of evolutionary theory since my days as an EEB major in college but this new data is a tremendously interesting intervention in the field and really shows how technology and statistics can overdetermine questions of theory
Looking for a postdoc? I know a really good candidate who's seeking a position. Great abstract thinker, strong evo/popgen background and CPU & statistical skills, some math & wet lab exp. Boundless curiosity, scholarly, helps everyone. High impact paper from PhD so far. Message me for details!
Our hope with this Perspective is to open a conversation. We would love to hear what you think and what remains to be done!
Come be our colleague! Very supportive department for assistant profs!
New Perspective w/ @petrovadmitri.bsky.social and Paul Schmidt! We ask what evolution-in-action studies tell us about an old question: what genetic variation matters for fitness, and what maintains it? ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

My group is recruiting a Ph.D student for Fall 2027!
We're a friendly group of mathematically-minded and computationally-inspired biologists studying topics including social evolution, host-pathogen interactions, genetics, and demography.
See vancleve.theoretical.bio for more info!
If you saw me talk at PEQG or PAG and want to try out a new method for assembling sex chromosomes, our paper and pipeline are live! Biggest shoutout to @scarey.bsky.social for pioneering this method and happy to have played a part in its application and deployment!
We already miss you! Cant wait to see what you get up to at NYU :)
I'm excited to share our new preprint: Generation of a transgenic cephalopod

Cephalopods (cuttlefish, octopus & squid) are crazy critters that dynamically camouflage to their surroundings by changing the color, pattern, & texture of their skin, which they control w their brain.
Thanks again to all who worked on this project: @jccvila.bsky.social, @shaili-mathur.bsky.social, @abhishdt.bsky.social, Marion Garin, @schacherer.bsky.social, @petrovadmitri.bsky.social, and @oliviamghosh.bsky.social (co-first author).
And thank you for reading! We would love to know what you think!
