About 25 people made it inside, where they tried to occupy the newsroom (4 were arrested). They never got their apology.
Incredibly, the Daily News was still making the same Lavender Scare arguments in 1972, and dropping in some gratuitous use of anti-gay slurs for good measure. This prompted a large protest at the Daily News Building—here’s the flyer advertising it (via NY Public Library archives)
The Daily News helped create the Lavender Scare of the 1950s, in which gay men were branded as a security risk and hounded out of government jobs. This from political columnist (and Nazi sympathizer) John O’Donnell is just one example.
Homophobia was the norm in American media in the 20th century, but the NY Daily News—America’s most popular newspaper—was worse than most. Best known example is the mocking coverage of Stonewall (seen here) but there’s more
Lots more on Maury and the seesawing politics of the New York Daily News in my book, The People’s Paper, available now from @columbiaup.bsky.social cup.columbia.edu/book/the-peo...
He won the Pulitzer Prize and sparked protests and boycotts. He wrote left-wing editorials for Collier’s magazine and right-wing editorials for the Daily News at the same time. He was vicious in print but reserved and unfailingly polite in person.
He was rabidly anti-communist, anti-internationalist, and often bigoted. Richard Nixon loved him (here’s a letter he sent to the Daily News publisher praising Maury’s editorials).
100 years ago the New York Daily News hired arguably the most talented, most controversial editorial writer of all time. Reuben Maury wrote almost every editorial in America’s most-read newspaper from 1926 to 1972. His pieces were compulsively readable and often shockingly far right.
"Invokes the power of a great 20th-century tabloid that “would tell it like it is without making a zoo out of it.”

The Daily News would remain the #1 selling newspaper in the USA until 1979, when it was overtaken by the Wall Street Journal
A bit of newspaper history from 100 years ago: the NY Daily News becomes the first American daily to reach a circulation of 1 million readers -- the Marvelous Million, as this 1926 house ad called them
"Like the Daily News itself in its heyday, THE PEOPLE'S PAPER is essential reading." --Nicole Hemmer

People called it "ghoulish," "revolting," "shameful" and "a damnable outrage," but that day's edition of the Daily News sold more copies than any American newspaper ever before.
Today's bit of newspaper history: NY Daily News photographer Tom Howard shows off the ankle camera he used to secretly capture the execution of Ruth Snyder in 1928. One of the most famous and controversial front pages of all time.
Here's what the New York Daily News wrote (and drew) about President Truman in 1952. He did not ban the paper's reporters from the White House.
The New York Times is taking a victory lap for its 175th anniversary, but did the mayor of NYC ever proclaim "New York Times Day"? Here's John Lindsay in 1969 declaring it "Daily News Day" on the paper's 50th birthday.
"A roller-coaster ride through the highs and lows of what was once New York's and America's loudest, brashest, most bombastic trafficker in local news."--David Nasaw
