And thinking of medieval letters on the 800th anniversary of St Francis’s death, herewith his autograph letter to Brother Leo, preserved in Spoleto’s cathedral

I remember contacting the archaeologists who found the Theatre of Nero because this was in the very area of the schola Saxonum. When Anglo-Saxon coins were mentioned, it was only natural to quickly get in touch with the brilliant @rorynaismith.bsky.social for another exciting collaborative project.

In the early Middle Ages, the Anglo-Saxons developed a “Little England” in Rome.

New research from @rorynaismith.bsky.social @francescatinti.bsky.social @department-asnc.bsky.social suggests that early English expats avoided ‘travel money’ hassle thanks to the Pope.

The image features a street scene in Rome. Superimposed is an inset of an historic illustration, depicting a seated figure in medieval attire reading a book. The text reads: "New Cambridge research: Anglo-Saxon expats received special treatment from the Pope in Rome's 'Little England.'"

My daughter was given this today at school as a guide for the pronunciation of Latin scientific names of plants and animals. I love no. 5: apparently, you need to pronounce an 'e' before 's' followed by consonant; as if a Spanish person had any chance of not doing that...
