Ukraine blows up Russian data centres and immediately and mysteriously online talk about Germany’s Far Right AfD virtually disappears. Stop Putin you stop the Far Right.
All the editors of Elsevier's _Games and Economic Behavior_ just resigned in protest at Elsevier's firing of one editor and attempt to hire new editors without involving the current board. The Game Theory Society is cutting off its association with the journal, and "exploring the establishment […]

If you imagine the waterline just about at it's widest part, and reduce the two gun decks to one (on the lower end of in-between the two), and you can see how it'd be fairly stable. The problem was adding that second row of (very heavy) cannon.
@David
It's wider than it looks there (the length makes it look narrower). And it's got a heavy bottom, while it's just a lightweight shell on the top. Here's a cutout:
@David
To be fair, the shape is fine. Many ships of the era had the same overall design. You have ballast at the bottom to keep it stable. Avoids a very deep draft.
The problem was that they'd way overloaded it with heavy mass toward the top of the hull (cannons and their ammunition weighs a […]
We're taking the bus into Naha today. Have lunch, go to the movies and do a bit of shopping. Mostly enjoying the clear late summer weather.
Everyone we know thinks we're weird for taking the bus instead of driving. But it really is much nicer. No circling […]

holy shit I got a free NordVPN subscription and their macOS client installs an endpoint kernel extension that just hangs around after an uninstall. There was a constant com.nordvpn.macos.Shield process. I had to boot into recovery and disable SIP to get rid of it. Part of that is on macOS that […]
Very very occasionally I find independent and eerily related threads by people I initially followed for very different reasons Today's topic is electric power safety and security, protecting against different kinds of bad at different scales but requiring engineering rigor, understanding, and […]

The file browser can generally find and open any user file on the phone though.
Edit: "Download" or "share to Files" is a share option in other apps, so it's clearly doable. Steam doesn't for some reason. They didn't consider the use case, probably; Steam desktop is clearly their main […]
@arclight
Also, I think the future is sandboxing like this, for admittedly solid security reasons. The mobile platforms have been forced to take app security seriously, and that is the result.
Fast forward ten years and I believe most desktops will be immutable (with overlays), with isolated […]
@arclight
The Steam Mobile App is clearly crappy/unfinished. And I don't want to take anything away from your rant - we all appreciate a good rant around here.
But when I click on a screenshot (got lots since I accidentally hit f12 a lot), it opens in Firefox (the original, full-size image on […]

The first ever email was reportedly a random test string ("QWERTYUIOP").
I'm pretty sure the second email was a rant about how the internet has gone downhill since the glory days.
You're in good company.
@moriel
I just looked it up to see I wasn't misremembering things.
KDE started in 1996, Gnome in 1999, and there were several other desktop environments already around at the time.
And Windows used it for shutdown or reboot For Windows 95 and Windows 98, and up until Windows ME released in […]
@moriel
Probably because ctrl-alt-del used to be the way you shut down a running computer, including Windows. And that is when KDE (and Gnome and everyone else) adopted it. To be consistent with Windows and DOS.
It's Windows that decided to change the meaning of it. And I don't think it's […]

Also, the hole is not an accident - you now have a small growing pot for a plant!
@arclight
That looks very good! Love the color scheme.

At least none of them are coming this way. We've had plenty enough this year thankyouverymuch.
