I have rarely seen such a high concentration of top microbiologists per square meter as at the recent @femsmicro.org Academy meeting in La Granja these past few days! 😱🦠 What a treat to spend quality time with some of the most fertile minds around. Intellectual overcrowding at its best! 🤓😀

3/4 My hunch: the missing piece lies in the thermodynamics of information. Capturing, processing and erasing information have physical consequences. Landauer’s principle may help explain how biological systems explore possibilities and turn information into adaptive solutions.

2/4 What if living systems are constantly computing their way through open-ended, multi-objective optimization problems? Evolution keeps finding solutions that look suspiciously like human engineering—or is it the other way around? 🤔

I started my career with P. putida in 1987 trying to purify the XylS regulator of the TOL system in a soluble/active form—to no avail. No one has succeeded thus far despite countless efforts all around the world. It would be awesome to finish my career with a soluble/active XylS & complete the cycle

Cannot believe it, but Roberto and I have been friends for 40 yrs! He started his Jr Prof position in Harvard while I was postdoc-ing in Berkeley! Science has changed a lot since then, but our shared passion & curiosity for understanding the world remain intact!
