apropos of previous thread by John Wiswell: writers have a lot of solidarity when it comes to contracts. if you are a new writer and you think something might be hinky about your contract, it is completely fine to ask other professional writers even (especially) if you don't know us.

A lot of talk about Bad Magazine Behavior today. For what it’s worth… we would LOVE to read your work; we have sample contracts linked in our guidelines, designed to be as author-friendly as possible; and we pay artists fairly for original art. It’s pretty easy to treat people well. I recommend it!

Now this may sound harsh, but I do think that if you design a piece of furniture that requires the use of an Allen wrench to assemble, but place the bolts in such a way that I cannot fully turn the Allen wrench, I should get to drop a cartoon anvil on you

many years ago i was in a Q&A with Holly Black and asked her about a scene in one of her books where ~2/3rds of the named character very suddenly die in a botched assassination-turned-massacre. most of the time, this makes me check out. but this one kept me very engaged. "how did you do that?"
