As the weather cools down, you might begin to see some more of our favourite feathered friends settling in for the autumn🍂🪶

Some are resident in the UK, while others migrate here for the winter, bringing a boost in numbers to some areas. Learn more at➡️ www.bto.org/birdfacts

Time for a #WeBSSpeciesSpotlight✨

Today we have the gorgeous Shelduck. These chunky, charismatic birds are usually seen on estuaries and coastal marshes, and they nest in burrows!

To learn more about Shelducks and other WeBS species, visit BirdFacts➡️www.bto.org/birdfacts

Their seasonality is present throughout the year, peaking during winter and spring migration. Weight is 1250g. Eggs are 8-10. Diet is small invertebrates, and some vegetation and seeds. Habitats are estuarine, marine and intertidal, and wetland.

Look to the skies over northern & eastern UK in the next few weeks, and you might spot Pink-footed Geese arriving for winter after a long flight from their Arctic breeding grounds! 🪿

🪶It’s Plover Appreciation Day!

These lovely birds get a whole day to celebrate their diversity and beauty💚!

You can help us track how plovers are fairing by taking part in WeBS▶️ bto.org/webs-vacant-sites

Were you out doing a @webs-gsmp.bsky.social count over the weekend? Did you see anything of note? Jemma had to decide whether she was looking at Tufted Duck or Scaup at her WeBS site in Co. Antrim. It was a tricky call but she landed on Tufted Duck in the end. IDing diving ducks can be tricky!

Data is still good data for WeBS! Thank you for carrying out your count and hopefully it will pick up as the winter progresses.

That time of year again: @webs-gsmp.bsky.social by bus! Unsurprisingly for September, Port Solent (Portsmouth Harbour) was quiet with a grand total of 27 Black-headed, 3 Common & 1 Herring Gulls 😅 #LowCarbonBirding

Window view from the bus showing the top of the harbour on the opposite side of the road. Paulsgrove Lake with shipbuilding yard and Portchester Castle in the distance Marina with lots of white boats. Behind is exposed chalk from a quarry on Portsdown Hill. It is sunny with some white clouds. A few houses can be seen around the marina Amy is wearing olive trousers and sat on a blue and pink patterned seat. In the gap is a grey and red hiking rucksack with a tripod strapped to it n the side pocket. The tripod is slightly taller than the bag. It is missing a head (packed inside bag). The tripod is held in place with an extra strap attached to the load-bearing strap used to lift bags. The frame is made of trampoline mesh. It has some tape to repair holes. The bus is mainly grey but has a photo with grass

Zero counts count! 🦸‍♀️

With the dry weather that much of the UK has experienced this summer, many of our wetland sites have dried up. We ask that counters still continue visiting dried up WeBS sites, as counts with zero birds is still incredibly important data. #zerohero

Are you a birder in Derbyshire and able to help us with counting the birds found on our wetlands, once a month? Then please do contact the WeBS Local Organisers at [email protected]

The next Core Count is this Sunday, so the perfect time to get involved!
