Halloween season is fun, 🎃 👻 but we fight to protect people from health care horrors all year round. 👹 Which one do you relate to the most? #HealthCareHorror
ICYMI: Last week @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social signed AB 280 (Aguiar-Curry)!
This bill addresses an issue we've been advocating about for years: finding a doctor in your health plan shouldn't be so hard.

5 measures on CA's ballot will shape health care. Here's where we stand:
✅ Prop 3—protects the revenue that funds Medi-Cal & public services
❌ Prop 39—voter suppression, plain & simple
❌ Props 41, 42 & 43—make it harder to fund our health care system

“Do I eat, or go to the doctor?”
That's the kind of tradeoff Californians described to CHCF researchers in a statewide listening effort called Worried Sick: Californians on a Health Care System They Can't Afford.

“Healthcare almost has to be one of the first things that you [the governor] are tackling,” our @rachellg83.bsky.social said. “Let’s be clear and honest as Californians about what we want and what we value. We need to make policy decisions that actually help people now.”
Health experts say HR 1 will result in a dramatic decrease in access to care: “People are going to lose care in high numbers, & they’re not going to know why” - Christine Smith, @healthaccess.bsky.social

"As a mom when my child is sick, my question is how do we get them to the doctor? It's not, did we meet work requirements, did we fill out our application forms, are we exempt, where's the right paperwork." —Our Christine Smith on the impacts of federal work requirements for Californians
"If you relied on an inaccurate provider directory, you won't be held responsible and have to pay out of pocket, because it should have been accurate in the first place," our junior advocate Jennifer Robles emphasized.

Private equity and monopolies drive up the cost of health care. 📈💸
Skyrocketing costs then eat into workers’ wages, force patients to delay treatment and put consumers in crushing medical debt. ❤️🩹
@cagovernornewsom.bsky.social, sign #AB1776, the COMPETE Act!
In 2013, a fire truck cost $500,000.
In 2023, the same truck cost $1,000,000.
Why? Private Equity and giant corporations took control of the industry and jacked up prices.
We can't let corporate greed make our communities less safe. @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social sign #AB1776, the COMPETE Act!
New federal public charge rules take effect Sept 18.
Officers may now consider many more benefits, including Medi-Cal.
Two things that have NOT changed: → Using a benefit ≠ automatic denial → Public charge doesn't change who qualifies for Medi-Cal
“It is not our goal to bankrupt a small rural hospital,” said our lobbyist Beth Capell. “But we are interested in penalties that will help to convince large, wealthy health systems and insurers that the state of California is serious about slowing the growth of healthcare costs.”
As of today, #AB280 (Aguiar-Curry) is out of the #CALeg and on to @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social 's desk. 🎉
For years, we've worked on legislation to help Californians find the care they need, when they need it. We're thrilled to see this important bill come so far! health-access.org/ab280-2026/
