"Congress should unequivocally condemn these actions by Trump, and commit to undo them legislatively," says @nancyokail.bsky.social. "They should treat this attack on a judicial body and its officers just as they treat Trump’s efforts to destroy domestic institutions of justice."

October 9, 2026 – In response to the Trump administration’s imposition of sanctions on the International Criminal Court as an institution, Center for International Policy President & CEO Nancy Okail issued the following statement:

“With today’s sanctions on the International Criminal Court itself, Donald Trump has moved from targeting the court’s officials to trying to strangle the institution outright. By cutting the court off from the banks, vendors and service providers it depends on, the administration is openly trying, in Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s own words, to cripple its ability to operate.

“This is the broadest attack yet on the one permanent tribunal able to prosecute war crimes, genocide and other crimes against humanity. It continues Trump’s efforts to make America a pariah state, and it gives comfort to brutal dictators, aggressors and human rights abusers around the world.

“It is no coincidence that this move comes just hours after Navi Pillay, a former ICC judge and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Her award is a powerful affirmation of the value of multilateral institutions and the rule of law. It is also a well-deserved recognition of a career spent defending human rights and pursuing the prosecution of war crimes. Pillay has been relentlessly defamed by defenders of Israel’s conduct for leading the UN Commission of Inquiry that rightly found that genocide was being committed in Gaza.“The Nobel Committee’s decision brings renewed attention to that finding and sends a strong message that it, and the people affected by it, cannot be pushed aside by political pressure. The Trump administration answered the same day with more pressure. As with its previous sanctions, the objective of attacking the court is to ensure absolute impunity for those who seek to act unrestrained by any law.

“This US assault on international law should be met with a strong response. States that are party to the Rome Statute should reaffirm and carry out their obligations to the court, including the consistent enforcement of its warrants and orders. The European Union, every one of whose members is a party to the court, should swiftly invoke the EU Blocking Statute to prohibit European companies and banks from complying with these sanctions and to shield the court, its staff and those who cooperate with it. Statements of support for the court are not enough.

“US Members of Congress should unequivocally condemn these actions by Trump, and commit to undo them legislatively, along with every previous round of sanctions on ICC officials. They should treat this attack on a judicial body and its officers just as they treat Trump’s efforts to destroy domestic institutions of justice.

“Defending the legitimacy of the ICC is an inseparable part of the fight to protect the rule of law in the United States and around the world. Those who fail to firmly oppose this attack –or worse, support it – are only helping Trump and his authoritarian friends make the world less safe.”

After a strong showing in the first round, Brazil seems likely to elect Flávio Bolsonaro, son of Jair, over incumbent Lula, despite Lula's success in delivering material results to Brazilians. @mpaarlberg.bsky.social explains why to @atherton.bsky.social internationalpolicy.org/publications...

Here's what Congress can do internationalpolicy.org/publications...

Members of Congress should
Oppose the Trump-Saudi nuclear deal, including by supporting a Joint Resolution of Disapproval against it.
Join Rep. Joaquin Castro’s letter calling for the State Department to answer questions about the Israeli nuclear arsenal and “hold Israel to the same standard of transparency that the United States expects from any other country that may be pursuing or retaining nuclear weapons capability.”
Promise to not abide by any corrupt Trump-Saudi nuclear deal once in control of government
@cipolicy.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 4:37 PM

In addition to rejecting the Saudi nuclear deal, that means ending the absurd, decades-long charade in which the U.S. government pretends not to notice the Israeli government’s nuclear arsenal. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

To respond to this new reality, progressives should embrace the goal of regional denuclearization for the Middle East, pushing to position the United States as an honest broker for de-escalating the nuclear arms race. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

@cipolicy.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 4:37 PM

In the wake of Trump’s Iran War, rejecting the deal may not be enough to prevent a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. As experts long predicted, Trump’s war shifted incentives for governments throughout the region toward acquiring a nuclear deterrent. internationalpolicy.org/publications...

Trump’s proposed Saudi nuclear deal is both a nuclear proliferation risk and a self-enrichment scheme for the Trump family. Congress should reject it, argues @samratner.bsky.social of @winwithoutwar.bsky.social

OCTOBER 1, 2026 BY NANCY OKAIL
Statement on Renewed Online
Harassment of Iranian-American
Experts and Journalists
October 1, 2026 - Center for International Policy President & CEO Nancy Okail issued the following statement in response to a new wave of online harassment against Iranian-American analysts and journalists:
"The Center for International Policy condemns the renewed campaign of harassment, defamation, and threats against Iranian-American policy experts and journalists, including CIP Senior Nonresident Fellow Negar Mortazavi, who attended a briefing with Iran's president and foreign minister on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York this month. Other attendees, including me, have also been targeted by harassment since the meeting."Speaking directly with officials of a country engaged in a highly consequential conflict with the United States, and reporting and analyzing what they say, is not an endorsement - it is the essential work of journalists and policy experts. At a moment when Americans urgently need to understand Tehran's positions and the prospects for ending this war, that work is more important than ever. Reporters and analysts from many major American and international outlets, as well as organizational leaders including myself, attended the same briefing.
Yet it is Iranian-American participants who have been most aggressively targeted and smeared as regime spies or mouthpieces, a pattern that retlects a bigoted assumption that their heritage makes them suspect.
"As we've said before, such intimidation tactics are antithetical to democracy and mirror the methods repressive regimes use to silence critics. Many of those now being attacked have themselves been targeted by the Iranian regime for their independent work.
"CIP stands in solidarity with Negar and with all of our colleagues facing these attacks. We remain grateful for their courage and for their contributions to a better understanding of US-Iran dynamics and the prospects for peace."
