Kate Cayley's "Walking" from Lent (Book*hug, 2023)

Walking

When the branches on the bare tree ahead turn to a red mist.

When the slanted stones rising from the water at your right
are a flock of crying birds.

When the pavement on which you set your feet is black ice.
You fall. The pavement will not yield
but offers two consolations:

that you are not yet dead. That you will die.

When the styrofoam granules of snow on the path melt
under your hand.

When some don't. They are styrofoam.

When you recognize the recessed bark of the winter tree
but can't remember its name.

When the orange spangled in the thicket is not plastic
but berries.

When the lake scalloped with light
is the light you saw
as a child walking in the park
when you fell to your knees

embarrassed by how inadequate you were
to what you must praise.

Aww. We have a Shepherd-Husky rescue & she doesn't care for confinement. The vet gave up tying to keep her in bed when recovering from being spayed & one day she chewed herself out of her kennel. I'm grateful she doesn't try to escape on any of her 2,000 daily walks.

Thievery corporation’s album Saudade resting on top of a turntabledust cover—both reflecting a tree in the window.

Album is a granular black and white print of a sorrowful looking woman with psychedelic poster-style swoops of blue and green surrounding her and psychedelic-style lettering “Saudade”

Finally got my hands on a copy of this double LP (at Rick Roll Records in North Burnaby!) and it's deliciously ominous for October. youtu.be/RIrLjAq8eUc

Boards of Canada album Inferno resting a top the reflective cover of a Technics turntable in play. Cover art is diffuse photo of people standing outdoors and a ravaged treeline silhouette at the very bottom. Predominant colours are red and yellow conveying an ominous tone.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day. As we reflect on the history and ongoing legacy of colonialism and the residential school system, and in support of the journey toward reconciliation, we would like to highlight a few of the Indigenous literature titles (1/8)

A collage of book cover thumbnails against an abstract orange background. Small footer text lists the publisher, Arsenal Pulp Press, and their website, arsenal pulp [dot] com, and in the top-right of the background is their logo mark (a circle with an off-centre jagged cross cut through) in semi-transparent orange. The books featured are as follows: “The 500 Years of Indigenous Resistance Comic Book: Revised and Expanded” by Gord Hill; “Tsqelmucwílc” by Celia Haig-Brown, Randy Fred, Garry Gottfriedson, and the KIRS Survivors; “Finding Otipemisiwak” by Andrea Currie; “Buffalo Is the New Buffalo” by Chelsea Vowel; “a body more tolerable” by jaye simpson; and “Together We Drum, Our Hearts Beat as One” by Willie Poll, illustrated by Chief Lady Bird.
