So much good stuff has arrived in HTML that gives us rich functionality for free and Chris helpfully breaks that down for us.

I'm really glad we're running this again. It helped us prioritise a lot of work this year. The previous method was 👍 on GitHub issues, which (imo) is too easily gamed, either intentionally or unintentionally.

It’s Friday, so let’s close out the week with some Good Links™ in The Index #201!

A good write-up on how annoying and harmful notifications are.

As Bramus says in the article, we can sort of do this already, but those substring selectors don't perform well. This new method is a very good improvement!

This is the stuff that's exciting about the AT protocol. Not the "new twitter" bullshit, but the endless possibilities that this technology opens up. It's using the fancy new private data stuff too.

After 7.5 months of tweaking, reviewing, and rewriting, the docs for Scroll-Triggered Animations have landed on @developer.mozilla.org (MDN)!

Congrats and thanks to Chris Mills and @estelle.bsky.social for their hard work and sweating the details on this!

The deep issue isn't that CSS-in-JS was always shite, it's that the epistemic rot has settled in so deeply that teams don't know how to evaluate engineering choices on any basis but GH stars and twitter clout.

Or as @baldurbjarnason.com quipped, programming as pop culture.

Plenty of people will refuse to buy a product that used AI (whether as a feature or just a promo). But no one out there will refuse to buy it because there's no AI in it. The profitable choice is not to use AI.

when everyone can generate anything with a prompt, how do you stand out? most app promo videos I see are indistinguishable from each other (because they were likely made w/the same basic prompt) the only way to stand out is to care and to put actual effort into what you make. been true. still true

LinkedIn screenshot of Todd Morey's post, which begins, "Life comes at you fast. I've been so flooded by animated demo videos I can't scroll past them fast enough. That's mostly because they don't demo anything about the product; they only demo the motion design Al is now capable of.
(Linkedin became a rave club over the last 10 days. My eyes...)
Now that Al has built decent competence in motion design, a flashy promo video is just another Al tell. So... what's next? love the art and craft of motion..."

Below, Jason has commented, "My hunch is that 'obviously made by human hands' is going to start carrying a 'premium quality' association even more than it used to.

"At CodeTV we've been leaning into practical effects (physically creating visual assets, moving the camera to 'animate' them, interacting with 3D props vs. having animated illustrations flying around the screen) to give more personality and perceived weight to videos.

"Al and other low-effort video gives the sense of, 'They didn't care at all about the quality of this. I wonder if they care about the quality of their product?'

"Going the other way with content sends the right signals, I think: 'Wow, these folks care! They're willing to do a harder thing because it produced a better result.'

"Feels like the best approach when everyone's smashing the Easy Button™ over and over again is to actually give a shit about quality."

Ever double-tapped a button on your phone and had the page zoom in? In this post over on @piccalil.li, @bell.bz looks at a simple CSS one-liner of `touch-action: manipulation` to prevent that, rather than messing with the viewport meta.

"Stop buttons triggering zoom when they’re double tapped" by @piccalil.li

Great post. Describes the problem I didn't even know I have, but also comes with a one-liner solution. I also didn't know about this property/value is in the CSS. As always top content!

It's so frustrating that this still hasn't been addressed with the new "masonry" capability. Not like we covered it over two years ago or anything. Thanks to Manuel for giving us the details here.
