Good Q!
A Rachel-like event (tropical or post-tropical storm moving thru far N Baja into SoCal) happens every few years.
The last system to come ashore *on* the SoCal coast as a tropical storm was in 1939!

Among the many potential impacts of #Simon and #Rachel: torrential rains south of Puerto Vallarta, top-10 high tide events for San Diego & L.A., and high winds + flash flood threats across the U.S. Southwest.
More from @drjeffmasters.bsky.social and me:
Warmer waters tend to cause stronger hurricanes. I detail a press release from Climate Central showing the details for Hurricane #Isaias.
The Colorado River basin's 2025-26 water year (October-September) was the warmest on record. It was also the least snowy on record. Only 16.8% of the (below average) precipitation fell as snow - shattering the previous record low.
Unprecedented: Friday is the first time we've had NHC advisories for both the US Atlantic coast ( #Isaias) and US Pacific coast ( #Rachel). And #Simon may hit Mexico as a Cat 4.
Full report from @irenesans.bsky.social @drjeffmasters.bsky.social and me:
A sign of things to come the next 8+ months, I bet: NOAA said "Record-high temperatures encompassed 16.7% of the Earth’s land and ocean surfaces—the largest spatial footprint for any month since records began in January 1951. This value surpassed the previous record of 14.2%, set back in May 2024."
Three landfalls in one weekend!
Fri night:
—Hurricane Isaias, central U.S. Gulf Coast
Sat night:
—TS Simon (MX), near Puerto Vallarta, possibly as a Cat 4
—Rachel (MX), N Baja Calif as tropical storm
The scoop from @drjeffmasters.bsky.social and me:
How often do we get three hurricanes or ex-hurricanes striking the coasts of the US and Mexico in a 48-hour period? It may happen this weekend.
Compare and contrast the current situation (“compact” TD 9 & its neighboring convective frontal wave) to the situation two years ago today with a more tropical-looking Milton and its companion convective frontal wave.
It’s the Spanish form of “Isaiah.” The current Atlantic naming lists were crafted to inckude names that reflect the heavily Spanish-speaking populations of the Atlantic tropics/subtropics.
Now is the ideal time for central U.S. Gulf Coast residents to review their hurricane plans, keep a close eye on official NHC advisories, and consider what they’ll need to do if tropical storm or hurricane watches are issued.
Things will evolve slowly and then more quickly with this one (Invest 92L). Thursday and Friday will be esp. crucial. No matter how it evolves in the Gulf, there'll likely be buckets of rain this week along the connected front in SE AL, S GA, and especially northern/central FL (potentially 5-10"+).
"Gasoline-only cars fell below 50% of global new vehicle sales for the first time, as the Hormuz crisis and record fuel prices accelerated the shift toward EVs."
very big day for Boulder (and the world) at the US Supreme Court tomorrow
France’s ongoing drought has once again pushed soil moisture further below historical levels than any previously recorded drought. Uncharted territory.
A crisis is brewing for the U.S. electricity grid – one that could make your electric bill skyrocket and thwart efforts to address climate change. Here’s what we can do:
"Remnants", not "remnents." Eeeek!
Hurricane remnents + Gulf inflow are slamming the I-35 corridor from E Neb to SW TX. Lincoln NE had its wettest day in 139 years of recordkeeping on Wed.
The soggy scoop from @irenesans.bsky.social, @drjeffmasters.bsky.social and myself:
Global model ensembles are in strong agreement that a prolonged &anomalous nearly West-wide autumn heatwave will develop this week & persist for 10+ days. While some daytime records may be set, this event will be more notable for its persistence & breadth. [Thread]
