Afternoon film

Occasionally I would like to remind people that I wrote a whole book about this. Intelligence is multiple, embodied, and relational, and what matters is different intelligences working together for mutual flourishing.

All three are hugely enjoyable films. Competitions of entirely different things trying to do entirely different things are stupid.

The last three sentences of this Catherine Bray piece about Jaws are perfection

... when he's trying to get back to her and can't...

What's supposed to be bad about it? "I spent the film longing to return to KST and Ralph Fiennes, and their passion." - totally. They're what I think of when I think of the film, one of my all-favourite onscreen love affairs. When he carries her out from the cave....

Every scene with Kristin Scott Thomas is absolutely dynamite. She is magnificent. The rest of the film works, but at a less elevated level. I spent the film longing to return to KST and Ralph Fiennes, and their passion. Their rather Graham Greene like story of sex and love and jealousy.

It does. Rewatch it.

Our film for tonight

Some people are really sniffy about this film but I love it and its Lean scale and ambition. Ondaatje's book is an entirely different, separate entity but excellent too.

Whuff!!!

1937’s utterly gorgeous Penguin Books building in Harmondsworth, Middlesex. Several decades after Penguin moved to central London, this lovely, historic Art Deco gem was pulled down. Which was just wrong.
