Weather: Mom you should run for school board. I’m so proud of you! Also Weather: Mom, the dog pooped on the floor. How are you gonna govern a whole district if you can’t stop the dog from pooping on the floor?

Our Statement on the Resolution to Delay the “Transformation Plan”

CHRISTIN, SHANNON, AND BECCA RESPOND TO RESOLUTION TO DELAY
'TRANSFORMATION PLAN'
This resolution represents bold and necessary leadership from our school board on the urgent issue of impending school closures.
Families have been clear: Any of these plans would destabilize schools and neighborhoods throughout the district, cause enrollment to plummet, and further erode public trust in MPS.
We desperately needed someone to stand up, and these two women did so. And for that, we are incredibly grateful. The fact that listening to and acting on the wishes of your constituents has become so rare on the school board unfortunately explains exactly how we got here.
To the rest of the board members: The vote on Tuesday for or against this resolution is deeply consequential, and families are counting on you to represent us and our children.
We expect you to vote YES.
Seeing the commitment of colleagues like Directors Callahan and El-Amin buoys our spirits and gives us so much energy to do the essential work of bolstering MPS in particular, and public education in general, in Minnesota. We are so excited to begin our work together with the board in January to get what our kids deserve!

Try to push through a monumentally bad plan to close a fourth of the schools throughout the district?

Prepare to deal with the ire of the Mom Brigade! ✊🏽✊🏽✨

Public schools connect with every part of our community. Workers are caregivers, and working families deserve elected officials who are looking out for their interests. Solidarity with labor builds a stronger Minneapolis for ALL of us! I am honored to be endorsed by @weareliuna.bsky.social

This is a major decision that will affect kids, families, and educators across our city. MPS should slow down, hear from more families and educators, and delay the vote so we can get this right.

I’m a proud Minneapolis Public Schools alum and parent. After talking with MPS families, I’m deeply concerned about the district’s current plan to close 14 or more schools.

The MFE rally to Stop the Transformation Plan was wet, but it was packed with people power and resolve! ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

Can’t wait to get to work with @beccaforschools.bsky.social @christin-with-mpls.bsky.social on the MPS school board to build a more sustainable MPS that is accountable to community.

Three MPS school board candidates stand with supportive signs at the MFE Stop the Transformation Plan rally.

The rally at Davis Center with MFE was so energizing—even in the rain. Some of our smallest schools are the most impactful. And as we were reminded by words on a child’s hand drawn sign: there is nothing wrong with being small.

The common feeling that came up? Everyone from parents, caregivers, guidance counselors, teachers, and students are feeling hurt and left behind right now. We can't move forward with this plan! Come to the next Community Open House so we can hear from you too! McRae Park Gym 10/7, 5:30-7:30PM.

☝🏽Pulling this out bc it explains this phenomenon without defaulting to the frame that special education (and the students it serves) are "expensive." Public education is a system and it's important to talk about the costs that way.

"Federal law requires [special education] services. Minnesota reimburses only part of the cost, so districts pay the rest out of their general budget. For MPS the difference was about $43 million in 2023-24, according to state figures, about twice the statewide rate per student."

Response to the MPS September 25 press conference from @shannon-for-d3.bsky.social @beccaforschools.bsky.social and I:

CHRISTIN CRABTREE, SHANNON GIBNEY, AND BECCA DRYDEN RESPOND TO MPS' SEPTEMBER 25TH PRESS CONFERENCE
"The district has been abundantly clear: The "Transformation Plan' does not save meaningful money for our district. The district's best case scenario saves $2,358,565, which assumes only 200 students will leave the district from this instability. The district is arguing that this plan will somehow increase enrollment.
Our board needs to now be clear that shocking families across Minneapolis with a rushed plan to close 16 schools is not an enrollment plan. Our students and families have been through so much over the last year, and they need stability.
Increasing enrollment begins with increasing stability and transparency, and building a plan to communicate the story of our incredible educators, dedicated staff, and brilliant students to families across Minneapolis.
Senior Executive Officer Ryan Strack was correct when he asserted that 'the only way to address underfunding is more money and that has to happen for school districts in an increased amount of per-pupil funding.' As parents who have been part of the fight for school funding at the capitol, we're excited to work with district leadership on a stronger plan to advocate for that funding at the legislature.
Our community deserves better and we are ready to get to work."

Statement on the MPS Transformation plans made public last week

Black text on a white background, reading:
“Over the past week, I have spoken with a number of constituents who have expressed great concerns about the plans Minneapolis Public Schools announced to potentially close several schools around the city.

There have been questions about how this would impact park programming and before/after school care through Rec Plus. As we await further information from MPS about these impacts, it has become clear that the community has not felt heard or supported in the communication of these potentially seismic transformation plans.

As a Minneapolis resident and as a fellow elected, I urge the Directors of the MPS School Board to delay a vote on these plans until the community at large has been engaged and understands the potential impacts on their families, friends, and neighborhoods. If the vote cannot be delayed, I urge them to vote against these massive changes- this can be discussed again in the future, but closing the schools will have immediate consequences for the affected communities.

I appreciate the constraints and challenges they’re facing. Delaying this vote and helping community partners understand the way this will impact our joint efforts will be a net positive. I look forward to working with them going forward to see how MPRB and MPS can work together to serve our communities.”
