Ensuring that kids can safely get to school, no matter how your kids travel, is one of the most basic functions of the City. I’m committed to continually improving that safety!

Yesterday I joined families from Field elementary at their “school street” biking and walking to school. It was fun to celebrate school and safely getting to school by walking and biking together!

This race has undeniable national implications. BOLTS mag has identified our campaign as a top 25 race shaping ICE accountability. Prosecute ICE: Vote Frazier

I want to acknowledge that this was an extremely frightening incident for neighbors in the area. I am in communication with MPD about this and will be following up to learn more information. Please do not hesitate to reach out to my office with any questions or concerns about what happened.

No injuries occurred as a result of the discharged weapon and there is no danger at this time to the surrounding community.

Yesterday evening Minneapolis Police responded to the report of a carjacking near the intersection of 31st. St. W. and Grand Ave. S. According to the police, during attempts to apprehend a suspect, an MPD officer discharged their weapon.

When I talk about OUR community, that includes Somali neighbors. There is no us and them, just us.

To our Somali neighbors: know that you are loved, we are so happy you are here, we love being in community with you, we will stand with you against this horrific hate, and we will not tolerate violence and harm brought against you.

Here in Ward 8 we love our Somali neighbors and know they make our communities and neighborhoods the unique and vibrant places they are. I will continue to work alongside Somali community leaders to fight for their, and everyone in our city’s, safety and ability to thrive.

I am at a loss for words for the hate and vitriol that Trump is showing our Somali neighbors. It fills me with anger and heartbreak to hear our precious community members described this way and to see the highest office of government in our country openly invite and instigate violence on them.

Ward 8 News from Council Member Soren Stevenson

Dear neighbors,

The City Council is preparing to amend and adopt a City Budget for 2027. The 2027 Budget proposed by Mayor Frey in August includes cuts to many programs that our communities rely on while increasing the budget for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) by more than $20 million.

We can recognize that the City is facing real fiscal challenges while rejecting false austerity. These narratives are being used as a pretext for cuts to programs communities rely on, all while allowing MPD to have an ever ballooning budget that goes unchecked year after year.

Fiscal responsibility doesn’t look like just cutting across the board. It means examining every major area of city spending, identifying inefficiencies and measurable outcomes, and ensuring every tax dollar the City spends actually improves residents’ lives or enhances a public good.

MPD has gone $20 million over budget two years in a row, and MPD leaders have publicly admitted that there has been mismanagement of overtime. Earlier this year, both the Commissioner of Community Safety and the Chief Operating Officer both publicly stated they were unaware of this overspending for nearly all of 2025. Earlier this year, when ICE invaded our city, our communities stepped up to protect our neighbors while the MPD did little to nothing to keep us safe yet still got millions in overtime compensation. It is not fiscally responsible to increase MPD’s budget by $20 million when it is widely known that mismanagement of MPD is fueling unnecessary costs that are not meaningfully improving public safety.

The budget is funded by working people, and they deserve accountability and oversight of how their money is spent. This year, the Board of Estimate and Taxation, the body that sets the maximum tax levy, made it clear that unchecked police overspending needed to be meaningfully addressed. The City Council has…

Differences in housing policy post-Surge couldn't be more stark. Both councils passed a temporary 60-day notice requirement for nonpayment evictions. Minneapolis: the mayor vetoed and council centrists refused to override. On pace for record evictions. St. Paul passed it veto-proof. Down 15% YOY

I was glad we could come together and talk about our shared goals and needs. Making sure everyone feels safe in our City is always a top priority.

Yesterday I joined residents at Horn Towers for a community discussion about public safety needs in the area. Our communities have gone through so much this year, and there is still a lot of instability and fear that our neighbors are feeling.

I am frustrated by this decision, but I look forward to working with my colleagues to keep exploring how we can protect workers and public safety by regulating AVs in Minneapolis. We will not give up on the job and overall safety of our neighbors.

@sorenwithward8.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 12:48 AM

Unfortunately, Mayor Frey chose to veto this initiative and leave workers at risk from these unregulated big tech AV companies.
