It is Chris - assuming it’s in Echinops

@vc28nature.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:43 PM

Keep looking Ruth. Once you’ve got your eye in they are surprisingly common

My wife discovered Phytomyza bipunctata mines on Echinops in our garden this afternoon. A nationally scarce miner. The mines look messy but are very elegant if you look closely - they have long thread like frass lines within the white galleries

Phytomyza germenilicis now published in collaboration with @dan-h-n.bsky.social, Carina van Steenwinkel & Rens Hendrickx. Look out for its distinctive mines on Holly (Ilex) seedlings this winter. @dipteristsforum.bsky.social @panspecieslisting.bsky.social

Look like aborted Stigmella mine Ruth. B ulmella mines are chunkier and stand out as white tick type mines

They look ok Steve - I assume the first larva has the four spots of Parornix behind the head? Nice to see the green larvae in the other mines

@vc28nature.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 5:46 PM

Wonder if it’s a failed sawfly mine Steve / vagans or dohrnii

@vc28nature.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:59 AM

@vc28nature.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 5:33 PM

Turn it over and look for a tiny hole in the roll of the cone. If you find it - the moth has already emerged
