Roughly where were these? I've not found any near me as yet. Lots more trees to check though.

Yes, they seem to have done well in Norwich, or at least in my garden. Other bumbles disappeared ages ago but pascuorum still going.

Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

Apple Day and Guided Walk at Thrandeston today - we had a plethora of apple & pear varieties to sample as well as rare specimen saplings to buy (for me, a Golden Russet). We are lucky to have such wonderful diversity. Among them a hard pear stored and used as winter survival food 500 years ago.

The big-eye jellyhead (Inopinoteuthis magna), in addition to having a very silly name, is thought to be the largest species of cirrate octopus, a group of octopus with small tendrils called cirri, fins and an internal shell.

One specimen of this species had a total length of 1.7 m.

My wife forebore to make herself clean today, but continued in a sluttish condition.

Garden wildlife. Last night the Zoropsis spinimana on the outside of the shed was feeding on something - difficult to ID, though it did appear to be one of the Anyphaena numidas that are also out and about on the shed at the moment, and likely passing quite close to each other. #Britishspiders

Phytomyza germenilicis now published in collaboration with @dan-h-n.bsky.social, Carina van Steenwinkel & Rens Hendrickx. Look out for its distinctive mines on Holly (Ilex) seedlings this winter. @dipteristsforum.bsky.social @panspecieslisting.bsky.social

Yes, definitely Dicranopalpus larvatus. Immatures so possibly males as well as females. Great find!

My wife discovered Phytomyza bipunctata mines on Echinops in our garden this afternoon. A nationally scarce miner. The mines look messy but are very elegant if you look closely - they have long thread like frass lines within the white galleries

Date Waxcap (Hygrocybe spadicea) Having an incredible bumper year in Britain following the hot dry summer and seemingly the same in Ireland. A pleasure to see 100's of fruit bodies this morning at what is now the 4th known Irish site (the 3rd also found this year).

Monaphis antenna ovipara on street silver birch in Norwich. Really high density @norwichbirder.bsky.social @vannabartlett.bsky.social #worldsworstmacro

Oh, they look nice. Must have a look for some. Good to see a few more species appearing after virtually none during the summer heatwave.

Something for Norfolk-based naturalists to keep a look out for this autumn. So far there is just a single county record (from New Buckenham Common)

I assume this species is fairly common but overlooked - Pale Hogweed Aphid, Paramyzus heraclei (influentialpoints.com/Gallery/Para...) at Whitlingham C.P. today. It feeds on the underside of Hogweed leaves, but handily creates this yellow mottling on the upperside. New for my #NorwichAphids list.

For #arachtober 10 and #InternationalJumpingSpiderDay a snap from my yard this week of Lyssomanes viridis (Magnolia Green Jumping Spider), my most-observed species of salticid.

Pale green spider on a darker green leaf, has eight dark spots on its body, seems to be looking up.

We didn't go either. Travel time there and back probably 4 hours depending on trains (and if they are even running). We were both out doing surveys yesterday so were writing up records today before hopefully being out tomorrow. Peak fungi season now we have had some rain. And harvestmen hopefully!
