Pubs for the People has arrived

Described by @leninology.bsky.social as "one of the sharpest and strangest books ever written about English nationalism"

What more can anyone want?

📢💥PTO EXTRA 📢 💥- @leninology.bsky.social on the supposed humanity-ending threat posed by AI, the technofeudalism thesis, the UK's complicity in the Sudan genocide, and the UK government's shift to a somewhat more critical position regarding Israel:

"Kill all humans" by @leninology.bsky.social.

Tech fetishism, the ascription of human agentive powers to machinery, is always a political act. It obscures that the goals, the purposes, embodied in any technology are human purposes; more specifically, that they are the automated purposes of a minute subset of humanity, a class fraction, the twisted, ruthless, ketamined, indoctrinated, emotionally stunted moral nullities that rule Silicon Valley like child-kings, have made themselves the bearers of myriad impossible hopes, and have now bought their way into the Trump court. It says, that’s just how the technology works, it’s a capricious demigod which can either shower us with riches or have us all killed, we must appease it and ensnare it, we must fear it and cherish it, but what we mustn’t ever do is stop throwing money at it, or stop genuflecting to it, or begin to think: this is nothing but our own alienated collective power turned against us by cut-throat capitalists, and in making us the servants of their technology, they try to make us their slaves. Because that, my friends, is Luddism. And I trust you know what that unfortunate incident led to

Interesting and accessible counterpoint to the latest concern hype about AI by @leninology.bsky.social (And it has a good explanation of the functioning and limits of LLMs, for those curious.)

It’ll be posted online! We just need to schedule it.

I checked with the editors and you are correct: that is the font and that is the reason it was chosen. You win the golden ticket.

A very nice recommendation from @adamtooze.bsky.social for the recent PTO episode with @leninology.bsky.social (on wildfires and the pyrocene) in his always excellent Chartbook series:

Incidentally I once shared a cab with Ball and, a few pints the worse, proceeded to enlighten him as to the flaws in his otherwise fine book. I suspect this is fanboy behaviour.

We put a fox’s arse on the cover of the latest Salvage. The issue leads with my essay on biology versus bourgeois materialism (which draws on, and criticises, Philip Ball’s eye-opening book, How Life Works).
