In a sea of bad news, Anne Carson wins the Nobel Prize. Hoora— oh. More bad news. Well, you can ignore it and spend today reading her!
Cover & frontispiece for Fred Borage's "Rural Class Struggles in Ambridge," a book I found at the now-long-gone Book Cellar in Brookline, MA. The owner had a resident black cat who roamed the bookshelves. The entire book is typewriter-font-written & includes crazy illustrations like these.
Gone Lawn is open to submissions for #68! Send us your gems and your garden animals now or whenever you feel like it, so long as it's not so long that it gets lost in the shaw. That happens sometimes, you know! The shaw is risky!
You went to art school as I did, so you know that the answer is in the post.
Aww, I don't blame you, friend. You're "just trying to be realistic."
. . . an excerpt from Adam Thirlwell's introduction to the republication of David McDuff's translation of Andrei Bely's extraordinary book "Petersburg." Bely, who died of a stroke when he was my age, was a genius of the highest artistic level, and for this reason alone . . . (more)
When Gone Lawn hit the 40s, we started getting confused with the numbers. 43 became 34 and so forth. Crazy time. Now we're looking forward to #68, and we don't know what's real any longer! What's 68? What is it? But we'll still deliver the stuff.
Oh, thank you, Matt!
Going through proofs now for #67. Be prepared! For this isssue, we're adding diacritics everywhere they're not meant to be. When authors complain we say, "Deal with it." Just kidding. Submissions for #68 will open on Monday.
I think we've said this before and if so it needs repeating: If we are closed to submissions of fiction and poetry, PLEASE do not send us your work slyly via email. Thank you. We will be opening for submissions again soon.
Just found this after months of looking the wrong place (I can be an idiot) : Gone Lawn is #22 among flash lit mags (we're 250 out of 1000 mags overall). According to Brecht de Poortere's rankings.
Our Best of the Net nominations 2027
Our Monarch nominations, sorry there are only three, all the nominations that were applicable and loved were in the wrong zone, nomination-wise, but we got three of you and these works are great!
Let us know if you agree or disagree with this adacious statement.
Also one more thing about our history & origin story : We established Gone Lawn w/ ð feeling that mainstream literature's terrible. Academic journals & high-end mags included. We had a long journey getting to quality literature but we believe we are better than The New Yorker & Granta [more]
We apologize about all the calls for donation, I don't like it but I'm disabled & I cannot earn a living through art or through editing, can cannot pay Submittable for the thing that makes us able to accept calls for the senior editor's comments on their work. So we can only survive on donations. ❤️
We've just discovered we've accidentally put 23 authors into our index, rather than 21. No problem! We have an extra large issue ready for pre-Halloween. (You may also read it on Halloween.)
Paypal, please stop sending all these emails, unless it's about a donation, we're in desperate want/need of those (though we resent those large cuts you take out of them, we need this money, you don't!) . . . domain payment not until January, we're okay until then but we still welcome donations!
We're now up to the limit regarding work for #67 and turning off submissions for the next month. Sorry if you were fine-tuning your work and now we messed you up! When we get work we love we just grab it. #67 is going to be an interesting issue, some great work in it. Plus, Halloween moon!
