What are Americans most concerned about heading into the 2026 midterms?

@dwj.eurosky.social breaks down what we’re hearing from more than 23,000 Americans through the Kettering-Gallup #DemocracyForAll survey about the state of democracy and the issues weighing on voters.

I suppose an analogy might be The Telegraph choosing to back Reform at the next election, or when The Times very occasionally backs Labour. My point being we don't *really* have a great way to define that this is different.

The UK’s Electoral Commission is developing an AI system to notify candidates of significant deepfakes within three hours of posting, its chief executive told a panel last week, Tech Policy Press fellow James Ball reports.

While IMO the Meta settlement is weak (and probably harmful) soft law, Kingsbury Commitment-style tea, I at least directionally agree with @morganweiland.bsky.social that the reflexive 1A critiques, especially the jawboning worries, are doctrinally (and politically) exhausting and unhelpful.

Michael Shellenberger appears to be preparing another piece falsely claiming that a conference of researchers studying disinformation is tantamount to a shadowy cabal of censorship. Spoiler alert: conferences, in fact, are the definition of free speech. My response to his questions is below.

I used to use some of those and I would not describe them as "accessible."

I actually think it's good if more people can make games, even if they don't know how to code! But would also be over the moon if we required companies to compensate people for data used to train LLMs. Two things can be true

@dwj.eurosky.socialOct 5, 2026, 9:16 PM

On the other hand, whose labor did this displace? Assuming the creator had no money to hire human coders? It's still a cute idea, and one which might not exist without AI. I'm against big studios replacing employees or artists. But a vibe coded game can still be a good game. I'm not mad at it.

Advocates won 14 design changes in Meta's recent settlement. Meta admitted no wrongdoing, paid roughly three months' profit, and avoided Mark Zuckerberg taking the stand.

How would those design changes hold up if they had been court ordered or passed into law?

NEW: The new Apple Watches double as AI-powered listening bugs for generating convo "recaps" or transcripts of any previous 15 seconds. But fear not, Apple says, this data isn't sent to Apple/gets encrypted, speakers aren't ID'd, and there's a chime for the 15-second thing. @lhn.bsky.social reports:

wired.comApple Doesn’t Want You to Worry About the New Apple Watch’s Listening FeaturesThe new Apple Watch includes several “intelligent” listening features that have privacy and security baked in. But the protections can’t change the facts of what the tools do.

Nation state ACTORS why do I even type on my phone

@dwj.eurosky.socialSep 10, 2026, 11:05 PM

I am not trying to pooh pooh this concern but manufacturing a virus requires sophisticated training, expensive equipment, and specialized supply chains; AI provides blueprints, not viruses The threats described are believed to be nation states across that already have horrifying bio weapons.

IMHO: Context comes from *reading* the literature and seeing what it cites. I'm not sure an LLM is less useful than Google Scholar in this regard. But both are ideally a starting point, if you have time to go farther.
