The spirit of the stairs told in tug at clothing, sudden rush of jasmine perfume or laughter of children. Told in tobacco fug, in an undeniable, audible wheezing. Told in whispered curse or snide tutting. Told in sudden shove. Staircase spirits are rarely less than bold. – #CJosiffe, 1982 #Ghosts

Essential #SpookySunday reading

@folkhorrorrevival.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 8:55 PM

I expect FT's Alien Zoo column will be covering this, I was reading the latest issue earlier today and there was this piece on a newly split species of European rabbit. Vital research for biodiversity and conservation but irrelevant for cryptozoology.

Section of text about the European rabbit being split into two species after genetic analysis with a photo of a rabbit.

I can’t remember which Blueskyer remined me that staircases are liminal, like bridges and crossroads, and therefore favourable for hauntings. There are many #haunted examples – such as the one where the famous Brown Lady of Raynham, #Norfolk, was maybe photographed in the 1930s. [More

One of the few first hand ghost accounts I've been told was from my former landlord who felt a presence on the stairs in a former home and the strong smelt cigar smoke. She later found out a man who lived there before her and had passed away smoked cigars.

“O Death, rock me asleep,
Bring me to quiet rest,
Let pass my weary guiltless ghost
Out of my careful breast."

-Anne Boleyn.
It’s believed that she wrote this during her imprisonment in The Tower. Her headless ghost is said to haunt its halls while holding her head.

Someone needs to publish a complete catalogue with a checklist of them all. I've only seen fewer than 5.

South Yorkshire's Stocksbridge Bypass is allegedly haunted by a monk-like figure who appears suddenly in front of cars & even grabs drivers' legs. In 1987, 2 security guards encountered the apparition - police investigating 2 days later had a similar experience. #spookysunday #folklore #gothic

In 1880, St. Simons lighthouse keeper Frederick Osborne was gunned down by his assistant over an argument. Ever since, keepers reported heavy bootsteps climbing the 129 cast-iron steps at night - sometimes checking on the lens machinery. #SpookySunday #GhostStories #Georgia #Folklore

The St. Simons Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling were built in 1868-1872, replacing an earlier light station destroyed during the American Civil War.

The tapering brick tower still serves as an Active Aid to Navigation and houses the original third order Fresnel lens. Designed and manufactured in France, the lens casts its beam 23 miles out to sea.

The Dwelling was home to lighthouse keepers and their families until the light was automated in the mid-1950s. In1975, the Dwelling became a museum of coastal history, operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society.
