I've long subscribed to the you can love the art despite the flaws of the artist. I'm gay but I don't really see Oscar Wilde as a gay martyr - unless it's OK to make use of teenage rent boys in London and Algiers. But this is the guy who wrote 'The Happy Prince'. People are complicated.

I couldn't agree more. I've just finished reading 'Night And The City', written by Gerald Kersh in the 1930s. It's full of racist language but that's because it reflects the speech of London's criminal underclass at the time. And that's what makes it valuable (plus it's also really well written...).

A 1950 edition of the seminal 'Survey of English Ghost-Lore' with its Lynton Lamb cover - such cheerful colours but O what a horrible image when you look more closely! Thanks to @folkhorrorrevival.bsky.social for spotting this post.

It's a 1950s reprint. Not one that one sees very often these days. It carries the same John Farleigh illustrations as the first edition.

Elisabeth, The Cow Ghost was written and illustrated by William Pène du Bois in 1936 when he was 19 years old. The book tells the story of a kind, gentle cow that dies and wants to return as a scary ghost.

Illustration of phantom / ghoul with green head scarf / veil with a red face, black eyes and a bristly nose and chin, it’s a head portrait with cloudy mist…ectoplasm under its head. 👻

Dating from the 13th century, the Lamb Inn, Norwich, has a benign ghost - said to be former landlord John Aggas, murdered there by his brother-in-law in 1787. Children staying at the Lamb have told of a kindly man who sits at the end of their beds and recounts ghost stories to them ...

The site where the Korean Declaration of Independence was read was made into a Japanese restaurant by the occupiers, popular with soldiers, but a year later in 1920 a rain of blood fell on everyone in the restaurant, the spirits of the dead angry at freedom denied. #SpookySunday

Japanese soldiers marching through Seoul in 1904-1905, rifles on their shoulders, packs on their backs. The people of Seoul watch in silence.

#SpookySunday "Passers-by who walk along the marshes under the sun’s last rays, beware that gigantic monk who suddenly rises up from amidst the reeds. Flee, and don't listen to his damnable talk!"

A ghost who reads ghost stories - me like. But they might have just been boring stories about him and his mates.

The witness took a look inside all the nearby rooms and found them to be empty. She saw the apparition on a second occasion, too. The owners had never had the impression their house was haunted or knew of any tale to account for the ghost's presence. It was never seen again and remains a mystery.

In my thread on haunted staircases, I'd forgotten this one. In June 1884, Kathleen Leigh Hunt was staying with her cousin in a house in Hyde Park Place, #London. She told the @spr1882.bsky.social : 'One morning I seemed to see, about two stairs in front of me, a figure...' [Cont:
