When a country requires permits beyond its territorial waters for political reasons, it is in practice claiming more territory, @elisabethbraw.bsky.social writes.
Thrilled to read this review of The Undersea War by @edwardlucas.bsky.social in @thetimes.com www.thetimes.com/culture/book....
Thank you!
It was such a pleasure to discuss The Undersea War in Dublin this morning - especially since 1) the first intercontinental cable connected Ireland (and Canada) 2) Ireland remains the cable junction of the northern hemisphere (Ireland, alas, doesn't have much in the way of maritime defence.)
Today is the day!
The Undersea War goes on sale in the UK (and online). Available at @waterstones.bsky.social, @foylesforbooks.bsky.social, Daunt, Hatchard, The Guardian Bookshop, Bookshop.org, etc etc.
The US edition follows on the 13th.
Delighted to learn that The Undersea War has been selected as one of @newscientist.com's best new popular-science books.

Out on 8 October.
Read the piece.
Yes, I have written about it in the piece.
Oh and...The Undersea War is six days away.
Australia is creating a brilliant backup plan to allow its financial system to keep operating - think debit cards payments for food - in case its cables are cut.
It's an unlikely scenario - but important to prepare for.
Learn from Australia!
Haha thank you!

Thrilled to see this @theguardian.com feature of The Undersea War.
My farewell column for @politico.eu, about the costs to businesses targeted by Russian greyzone attacks.
You can now find me as a defence and security commentator at @news.sky.com and, of course, at the wonderful @foreignpolicy.com.
www.politico.eu/article/euro.... No paywall.
Correct, it wasn't me.
"Braw's writing sparkles."
Chuffed about this @financialtimes.com verdict of The Undersea War.
Arrived.
And now a warning from Macron too. There are clearly indications that Russia is planning to escalate in the greyzone.
This week, greyzone warnings from:
Donald Tusk
Alexander Stubb
The UK government
And a young man has pleaded guilty to vandalising British mosques on behalf of Russia www.bbc.com/news/article....
Anyone can be targeted.
It's great to see resilience efforts underway in several countries.

This spring Norway, the UK and the US caught Russian submarines training to unleash a secret weapon designed to disable critical undersea cables, Reuters reports. Only unnamed sources, but potentially very troubling news. The undersea war... (The Undersea War, incidentally, is 28 days away.)
