On @newstalkfm.bsky.social just after 5pm today to talk about my new book Before the Vote, and the urgent needs to start formal planning for a possible referendum on a United Ireland. www.dcu.ie/north-south
Looking forward to this event at The MAC on Thursday evening, depending on how the place looks at that juncture given how the week is shaping up...
Last chance. Belfast Book Launch. Thursday 1 October, 6pm. The Mac, Exchange St. Belfast. All welcome.
The book is not arguing for or against a United Ireland. It looks at the evidence and what needs to be done to avoid the chaos of a Brexit-style referendum.

Northern Ireland's public expenditire as a percent of regional GDP is around 50% - only just above the EU average. UK average is 46%. The regional imbalance in the UK economy is high and despite the rhetoric of deficits in Wales, the North of England and NI, UK regional investment is poor
Presenting raw public expenditure over time distorts the real picture. It ignores inflation & growth. Expenditure as a % of GNI is very stable in the Republic at 40% of GNI*. It was 53% in 2013 towards the end of the crisis. EU average is 49%. We can spend more
I agree - if funders cannot review the ever increasing number of applications, then tighter focus in calls or even a simply lottery to choose those going for human review would be better
"Asking whether President Trump can put the provision for a vote back on the table after unilaterally Burnham took it off is immaterial. The responsibility for planning for such a vote is largely one for the Irish Government" Only they can commit to implementing a plan. www.dcu.ie/blog/2266/tr...
