Anyway, that leaves my final (?) ranking of S&S adaptations as 1. 2008 2. 1995 3. From Prada to Nada 4. Kandukondain Kandukondain 5. 1981 6. 2026 7. 1971 8. Material Girls Reasonable people should stop no later than number 4.
A disappointing end to our S&Sathon with MATERIAL GIRLS (2006), a very loose adaptation set in present-day LA in which Hillary and Haylie Duff play cosmetics heiresses. Which is Elinor and which is Marianne? We could barely tell them apart, both characters were awful. We'd enjoyed FROM PRADA TO […]
In BRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2004), the role of Lady Catherine de Bourgh is split in two: Mrs Darcy, who is trying to arrange a marriage between Will Darcy and an heiress whom he doesn't love; and the United States of America, about whose superiority Mr Collins/Kohli will not shut up. In this essay I […]
Thailand eliminates rubella as a public health problem. The milestone, verified by the WHO, is the result of a vaccination programme that began in schools in 1986 and expanded to all one-year-olds in 1993. Thailand is the seventh country in the region to achieve elimination […]
I didn’t even notice this one at first. This is cool! Talk about a weird machine. > 376. Universal computation in forced Navier–Stokes flows. Constructs viscous incompressible flows starting from rest on a fixed flat three-dimensional domain that perform universal computation under smooth […]
If we continue to name things after paper authors then future mathematics will look like: Using the OpenAI transcendence property we show that OpenAI vectors in an Anthropic bundle on an OpenAI manifold when Anthropic-induced by an OpenAI-homomorphism are always Anthropic-OpenAI in the critical […]
okay, _Coyote vs Acme_ is legit the funniest film I've seen in ages. whoever made this film realized that emulating the slapstick comedy of Looney Tunes requires one to completely abandon internal consistency, the laws of physics, and basically anything else that makes too much sense, in favor […]
If you publish any #OpenSource and you want people to use it, may I please implore you to test your README?
Can you actually follow the steps you've written down? Does it work if the user doesn't have the same development packages installed as you? […]
I feel this is getting a disproportionate amount of attention on here, relative to the 369 papers that haven't been withdrawn
@pozorvlak @counting_is_hard in my case, the “Friis equation” is never actually used in the form specified in Friis’s paper, as he was trying to get people to use a different variable to represent antenna performance to the one that eventually became standard. His form makes a lot more sense if […]
@pozorvlak @counting_is_hard this is where textbooks often add a lot of value - for example, transforming older units into SI, rearranging equations to the form that’s most useful for practitioners, and combining results from multiple sources to create useful rules for students to learn.
When I was working on my PhD, there was a particular result that "everybody knew" was proved in Blackwell, Kelly and Power (1987). When I actually read Blackwell, Kelly and Power (1987), it explicitly said that they did *not* prove that result. In the *introduction*. (The result was correct […]
Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of: * specifying requirements * verifying correctness and quality * maintaining and operating software you didn't write As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!
@robinhouston "Update the superpermutation bounds spreadsheet" is almost a daily chore at the moment!
Does any of the OpenAI maths have real-world consequences?
@robinhouston of course, the real question is whether we'll see a solution to the minimum superpermutation problem!
@robinhouston bah! Sorry, that was definitely one of the intended possible responses. Bad mastodon, no biscuit.
OK, gonna stick my neck out. I think there is a good chance we will see a claimed solution to Hodge and maybe BSD by the start of #BigMathsJam. I would be shocked if we saw solutions to PvNP or Riemann. I have no strong opinion on Yang-Mills.
Vale Margaret Hamilton.
She was a Software Engineer.
She was the _first_ Software Engineer because she defined the term, Software Engineering:
"When I first came up with the term, no one had heard of it before, at least in our world. It was an ongoing joke for a […]
