Leading a 6wk online reading group on PLAYTHINGS through Bathers Library starting next month. A thematic book club examining the role of dolls, puppets, action figures, mannequins, and maybe a robot or two in recent fiction and nonfic texts.

Come play! bathers-library.square.site/product/fall...

Event graphic for PLAYTHINGS: Reading Dolls in Contemporary Literature, an online reading group facilitated by Kristina Ten. Highlighter-yellow background. In blue handwriting-like text in the upper right: "Six Wednesdays, 6–8pm Pacific, starting Nov. 11." In the lower right, an illustrated nesting doll in shades of red, blue, and yellow.Continued event graphic for PLAYTHINGS: Reading Dolls in Contemporary Literature, an online reading group facilitated by Kristina Ten. Highlighter-yellow background. Description reads: "Dolls have a stronghold on our imaginations long after childhood. Far more than decorative collector’s items, they have served as grief and memorial objects, surrogate children and caretakers, and lasting representations of beauty standards, bodily autonomy, and the strange, permeable barrier between the inanimate and the living. They comfort us! They freak us out! This reading group will examine the role of dolls (along with puppets, action figures, mannequins, and more) in recent fiction and nonfiction—beyond harmful objectification and easy nostalgia, and toward the doll motif’s potential for subversion and reclamation." In the upper right and all along the bottom border are illustrated nesting dolls of varying sizes in shades of red, blue, yellow, green, and salmon-pink.Continued event graphic for PLAYTHINGS: Reading Dolls in Contemporary Literature, an online reading group facilitated by Kristina Ten. Medium-grey background. Description in black text reads: "Bathers Library is a community-supported art book library, work/performance space, shop, and weirdo art school in downtown Oakland." Additional handwriting-like highlighter-yellow text reads: "Register at batherslibrary.cargo.site. Suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds <3" A nesting doll in shades of yellow, green, and blue pokes out, smiling, from the right side.

an interesting and, imo, important read. what does capitalism begin to consume (and/or accelerate its existing consumption of) as it exhausts material avenues for expansion? how do we (as workers, as storytellers) push back?

A screenshot of a section of the article reading: "So when you drink a few Monsters or Red Bulls, you’re still getting physically and mentally fatigued; your brain just doesn’t know it yet. It’s as if, instead of using an oven mitt, you just shot your hand full of Novocaine before grabbing a hot pan. The harm is still there. And in economic terms, this means that every time you work a long shift with chemical assistance, you’re not just selling your working hours to the boss. You’re also degrading the quality of life you’ll experience during your non-working hours, because that’s when the fatigue catches up to you, and you feel, to use the scientific term, like dogshit." The last one and a half sentences are highlighted.

Personal hobbyhorse, but thinking about AI in publishing is really making me want criticism to go harder on discussing the actual style & substance of books. If we just talk about plot & vibes, we're leaving the door totally open, & missing out on the good stuff besides. "It's just words on a page."

I think the same way there used to be smoking and nonsmoking cars on the train, there should be designated BART cars for people who are just gonna talk about AI the whole time cuz I don’t wanna hear that shit

Had a nice time chatting w/ students & faculty at Salisbury U, reading from Tell Me Yours for Writers on the Shore (of which I took no photos & which shall stay shrouded in mystery), becoming invested in the fried v broiled crab debate, & playing that once & forever study-hall glue game, 50ish deep.

John Picacio’s response to Must Read Magazine’s request for his waiver of all Moral Rights and Copyright of his commissioned art for an ASIMOV’S assignment. Short version — Picacio says a resounding NOPE.

"I don’t envy the marketing team who had to figure out how to promote this book. It is a horror novel in the broadest sense of the word, but even that misses the depth and breadth of what it accomplishes."
